If You Could Only Take Two Lures to Chesapeake Bay...

What would you take? Specific type and Brand would be helpful... I am more of a "Catcher" than a "Fisher" but figure I will get a line wet when we charter a boat next month... figure most of the fishing time will be trolling behind while sailing... got a couple of rods and reels but have no idea on what kind of Lure work up there so any suggestions are greatly appreciated..

my theory is that if you're catching fish you're sailing too slowly.

seriously, however, you want to match the lure with the trolling speed.

Vasco's right on for the bang for the buck. However, the "grocery getter" for me was a BIG diving plug (rapala, I think).

Rapala Stretch Magnum Float/Dive. By far the best for me.

Red hose eel, 12".

Bunker spoon.

Any fishing store on the Bay, including West Marine, will have what you need.

Also, a post from my blog on what worked this spring, though trolling is really only effective spring or fall. You will have better luck fishing at anchor with fresh bait. Any fishing pole will work, or even yo-yos, as below.

Dead on. Look for birds working the surface and motor or sail around the edges working the Repala...GREAT with kids...

I know what I am talking about. We have dragged lures for 25,000nms and caught 4 fish. Its not fun anymore. I'm getting a fish dinner no matter what!

Unless you're after Spanish Mackarel. A Clark spoon is a good choice.

Bucktail, cast it, troll it or jig it a/w Rapela minnow you got it covered.

I keep a shad rig and 50' of steel line on board. No pole, no reel, just clip it to the aft mooring cleat and drag it. Six-eight white rubber shad on an umbrella rig. Put a bell on the line two feet aft of the transom and learn to recognize when there's a fish on. Nothing like fresh rockfish after a day at the helm.

You might not be aware of this: In order to catch ANYTHING while trolling, you MUST have a hot woman spit on the lure before you drag it. Dont ask me why...just do it. Hot Elfs work too...

PS; Use a green and yellow rubber squid thing with a cupped face dragged on the face of the second or third wave back. Dont ask me why about this either...

And a fishing permit. I get stopped about once each year, about every 15th day of fishing. Big fines, but so far, I've always been legal.

If you eat a Rockfish on-board, don't get caught with the fillets. It is illegal to cut them up on the water (because you could hide the size).

Absolutely. Catch and eat. And in addition to a DNR license you have to register with the Fed if you fish on the bay. Next year we have to actually pay for it. Hopefully by then I'll be pier fishing in Ft Myers. If the fish in the gulf are still there and edible.
