Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie

Performance of a lifetime? If Redfords job was to play "confused idiot", IF...... he knew better, then he did a good job. Personally I don't think the actor, writer, director, or key grip had a clue. And if Redford had any knowledge of the subject he would have run away, fast. The "performance of a lifetime" business says more about the critics than the acting or the movie. How could any critic that liked his job say
Robert Redford was lousy?

Honestly Doodles, I was numbed by that from the trailers.

Or how about his climbing up the mast. He had too much confidence, and you could read that he had planned out exactly what he was supposed to do as an actor. He didn't reflect the experience of someone who does this as a solo sailor and is slow, methodical, and careful. It came off very strange.

umm broken VHF antenna connection?

Oh we need him to climb the mast and fix something.

In 40+ years of boating and playing with CBs and such how about never.

That detail bothered me as well but there were so many inconsistencies, large and small so why worry about just one more.

If they needed him to go up the mast, how about hitting his ticktack wireless masthead unit with a hammer out of frustration - that would have been much more convining!

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie

Finally got to see the movie a couple of weeks ago at a cinema.
I enjoyed it.
Sure, loads of sailing errors and plot holes, but the premise, the acting, the metaphor, spot on.
Don't see what all the fuss was about. It's not a documentary, or a 'how-to' show, it's a moofie. Suspension of disbelief and all that.
May there be many more like it.

He lived of course. Though there are a good half of the audiance that want to read some kind of symbolism into the end. For me, I will just go with what was shown in the screen.

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie

Well the thread bump got this in my visibility and I only read every 5 pages or so but -

I hated it but I couldn't say why really - This thread helped me figure it out.

I found myself like others scoffing at a lot of the really dumb stuff depicted. So it isn't an "accurate" sailing movie.

As far as an entertaining movie, it wasn't entertaining. One guy, no dialog, bumbling along from one mistake to the next. Maybe if they had even used a prop like him completing and narrating a daily log so we could have some idea what this guy was thinking.

You certainly could not figure it out from his facial expressions.

However - I do want his mid starboard cabin locker. That thing seemed to be magically huge. It seemed every time he needed something from bosuns chair to jib to 6 man raft it came outta that same locker - LOL

Maybe as a movie it was "art" but sometimes art is really boring.

That part was cut out of the movie. It was only Redford's character muttering"

"Should have bought that EPIRB, should have bought that EPIRB."
