For the low price of $29.99 i will send you a certificate of your new status, and the tonnage level will depend upon a formula calculating size and depth of the indentation in your armchair, multiplied by number of criticizing posts, divided by nice helpful posts, minus posts made while drunk and making no sense, multiplied by number of posts that made me laugh, then divided again by years your boat has sat unused.
Endorsements for the following:
How to tell someone how to tow,
Instructive rough weather sailing
What anchor you should use,
Why cats are great
Why cats are bad,
And so many more are only an additional $9.95 each or 3 for $50.00

Act now as supplies are unlimited ..

Thankyou for your kind offer , but I must decline. The reason is that I have not spent 25 years at sea completing a squillion miles before the mast.........so know how the internet and the rest of the world works .

Now, if I can interest you in a bucket.........

That weather off N.Z. has turned the weather rainy here on the east coast of oz.Six meter waves and 70 knts should be character forming methinks.

A government should give the best information available on risks, but ultimately its the choice of adults to decide, not some government official.

SAR costs are not relevant, if a country can't afford SAR, then make sure everyone knows so they can plan accordingly, not like Grenada's 'fire' dept.

Re: New Zealand Immigration Officer Making Wild Claims

SAR costs seem to come up a lot on these kinda threads, think of all the crap western governments spend on themselves and other B.S. the cost is tiny as far as rescue goes.

Re: New Zealand Immigration Officer Making Wild Claims

In the images, it looks like the boat needed some fresh paint (when the images were taken). Too bad some NZ authorities may have read your blog too. Some say: go quiet, go far ... I assume your boat was better shape when trying to depart. I believe one should be free to go. Bad thing when one can't.

Then, think of that NZ officer. IF the boat looked like in the images. And the weather out there can be rough. I mean it as we had a severe knockdown sailing in. I think the worst accidents in that area happen when boats sail out ...

I wish all the best to the skipper - may you be able to get the boat to the shape that satisfies the authorities and makes your sailing safer.

The departure window is not all that long, so probably if you cannot make it this year, just stay put, work some, refit some, go next year.

Cheers & good luck,
b.

This came straight off the New Zealand Maritime Page:

"Inspection of foreign ships by Maritime New Zealand is provided under Section 54 of the Maritime Transport Act 1994. If a ship is substandard, Maritime New Zealand inspectors have the power, under Sections 55/397 of the Act, to detain it until it is brought up to standard, or to impose conditions upon its operation"

+1!

I can empathize with both Sean and the NZ official.

My boat was in the middle of a refit when I had to move to a new marina and the boat looked like crap.

On the other hand, there have been times when I became aware of something that I should have taken action on and didn't.

So, lets assume that there are no bad guys here and cut these guys some slack.

Re: New Zealand Immigration Officer Making Wild Claims

I wonder if the authorities have a habit of hammering the offical who approved the departure when they come back from a rescue of a vessle that wasn't safe to leave?

Lots of people going on about how far he's gotten but that's false logic. You can put on a blindfold and earplugs and walk across a rural highway. You may survive but it doesn't mean its a good plan.

Based on the available info, I'm thinking the boat looks like a train wreck and the official doesn't want it on his head if the guy gets in trouble.

Fresh shiney paint looks great & gets admired but it does naff all for your chainplate bolts. Probably keeps officials happier.
"well it looked alright" Pretty superficial wee humans.

Oh & if you think keeping Orions/Hercs continously in the air for days equates with a dingy on Thursdays 9-5, you have a screw loose.
