Trim and Teak Below

While taking a break from cruising I've been taking on a number of DIY projects. As a break from the heat, my next task is below where I have a 6.5'x2.5' area on the inside of my hull in the main cabin. This area has an original vinyl covering with horizontal one inch wide teak battens spaced about two inches apart.

I'm considering three options:

1- Remove and refinish the teak battens and replace them over the cleaned or replaced vinyl restoring the original design.

2- Remove the vinyl and epoxy a few vertical studs to the inside of the hull and then affix new plantation teak horizontal battens abutted close over foam insulation between the studs. ($350 DIY estimate)

or 3- Your Idea? Thanks for your thoughts, Hudson Force

My opinion, pick whichever would look most natural with the rest of the boat. You don't want to upgrade something that would make the rest look so shabby that you now have to upgrade everything.

No worry in that regard. Our present interior design is pretty much "eclectic explosion in a dark cave" .....

Without opinins and ideas for something else, I just kept the same old Tolex vinyl and just refinished the teak strips. I painted the Tolex while the teak pieces were off.

OH, Dangies!

I was going to say, paint the hull matte white and re-install the battens. I should have been faster, but you have solved the problem: it looks "fresh", helps with the "caveyness".

I used the same Interlux Brightside polyurethane "Bristol Beige" that I use for my non-skid paint on deck. ...without the sand, of course! It does stink a bit while it's drying so we celebrated the small job by staying in a motel overnight to avoid the fumes!
