Folks,

Thanks for you comments Re: the Fine Multi. I have one and it's awesome in most cases. It isn't appropriate, however, for epoxy-laid decks, (I wish it was). You can't get the bit to "bite" because you can't get under the teak. Even after 37 years, 98% of the planks are still well adhered to the deck via the epoxy. The best method I've found is to pound a chisel under the wood, across the grain, and pry it up in small pieces. I then use the hammer anc chisel to shave off most of the remaining wood. I hope to get the last of it off with a sander. I wish there was an easier way than swinging a 2.5 lb sledge hammer 50,000 times.

(Side note: there are no screws under the bungs. The screws have all been removed, the holes have been filled with epoxy and bungs have been reinstalled. I can't tell if the was done by the builder or one of the PO's)

I am happy to relate that I'm about 1/2 way through the process and I have only expended have about 20 man-hours so far. The worst part is the strain on my lower back. The second worse part so far was removal of the genoa tracks.

Lookin good...! A belt sander and a 4" disc grinder will be the tools of choice. The disc requires some talent to keep from gouging...

Here's an update on Aurelia's Teak Deck Removal Project, (started 11 months ago). All teak is removed, the deck has been faired, (5 gallons of System 3 Quick Fair), and two coats of Sterling High Build Epoxy Primer have been rolled on. Total time so far = 170 man-hours, costs have been less than $1,000.

This has not been any fun.
