Re: Steel Hull 45 ft New Deck

When you decide to go with the Plywood, Do your self a big favor and dont be tempted to use the cheap POLYESTER type resin use Epoxy Resin as this will last you way longer and also provide better strength/adhesion,

If the cost is to high for Epoxy Laminating Resin then at least use a Vinyl Ester resin

To bond to the hull use 5200 and be sure it's 5200 not something LIKE 5200 once cured fully (around 7 days) this will provide such strength it will likely surpass the actual plywood tensile (A lot of GRP hulls to deck joints are done this way-with overlap grp),

If you use the 5200 for the adhesive join it will cut back the number of mechanical fasteners you will reguire, when fastening down the ply place weights on the deck between the fastenings to help get a 100% bond

Cheers Steve

Re: Steel Hull 45 ft New Deck

I am still considering this giant repair job on this boat, and would like to ask if anyone has an opinion on the SABB 2JRG 2 cylinder 30 HP diesel which was the original equipment. The prop is 20" diameter and pitch is 16. More on these old diesels here:

It looks good and I've been told it is in very good condition. The time to swap it out would be now though. I like the idea of a diesel sipping high torque at low speeds diesel - trouble is the parts are hard to find. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
