Paint sheen...topsides

I have a classic Catboat and am going to paint the Topsides. I don't want it to look like a shiny Clorox bottle ..is using a semi gloss a bad idea seeing as it is more difficult to clean?

Semi gloss give a nice appearance to certain designs

Semi gloss paints are not very UV resistant

Be alert If you live in a. high uv region

In general, you'll get longer lasting results if you paint with a gloss paint, and then cut the shine back with some wet sanding with really fine paper. 600, 800, 1000... depending on the "look" you want.

The gloss paints are USUALLY harder and more UV resistant than the semi-gloss--but it IS a question that I would direct to the technical support of the paint you plan to use. Formulations vary, a lot more than they used to, and things that used to always be true, are now... not

You can buy flattening agents for most marine and automotive paints.

semi gloss or satin is a great idea. i see no reason not to go with the best enamel you can buy of course. plus it hides various blemishes. you could always try the gloss and if you did not like it go over with satin or wet sand it. but that sounds a lot of work

Re: Paint sheen...topsides

Beware of self added flattening agents

Very difficult to use

use only factory flattened paints

A paint you might consider is System 3 water-based Two component polyurethane

It has s good reputation and water based paints are nice to use

Water base paints defect is that they can’t develope the same Super Shine that solvent based paints can

These paints are naturally semi gloss

Would second Slug’s suggestion of a 2-part poly. The prep is the same as for other topside paints, and it will last twice as long. If it’s naturally semi-gloss.... sounds like what you’re looking for.

It'll be harder to clean. That's the idea with gloss. It's more slippery and things don't stick to it.

Note: Clorox bottles are matte. Ha ha.
