oceangard antifouling?

Hi has anyone used or know about Oceangard antifoulingpaint.
It's rap is 3 years between reapplying.*

Oceangard antifouling*paint*is a revolutionary nano siliconeepoxy*resin hybrid that is both SMOOTHER and HARDER than Teflon.

Re: oceangard antifouling?

A local guy put it on his catamaran 4 weeks ago in the Gold Coast. It's a great barnacle magnet - Near total barnacle coverage after 3 weeks - no other growth at all. Trying to get it back off now at great expense. Absolutely not an antifoul!

I also have found this out the hard way!! Not suitable for any marine application.
The company is not being honest about the damage caused at this stage.

ANY quality anti fouling paint will perform well for three years, with proper maintenance. I do not understand why you Assies haul for paint annually.

No, it's just the boat is moored in a particularly heavy fouling area of Portsmouth area and everyone has the same problem. Strong tides and lots of nutrients in the water means the weed grows with alarming speed. Sadly you can no longer buy anything toxic in Europe less it poisons shell fish.

I will photo my next door neighbour when I am down the boat next, don't think he antifouled last year and the result he now has a salad garden growing under his yacht.

Anti fouling paint doesn't eliminate fouling, it merely retards it. This is why in-water hull cleaning exists as an industry. But maybe not so much in the UK. And this still doesn't explain why boats apparently are painted annually down under.

Re: oceangard antifouling?

We don't have the diving cleaning services industry in the UK that the US has. It may be down to the commercial diving rules. Its a while since I read them but they used to say to deploy a single diver into the water you need a standby diver fully rigged, a supervisor and if the in water diver is roped on then a tender, so 4 people for one in the water. Some shocking diving accidents in the North Sea in the early 70s created a knee jerk response from Government across the industry.

Discussions in the yacht club about antifouling paints all end with the same conclusion, you may as well use ordinary house emulsion paint for all the good the stuff does.

I bet part of the explanation is that many or most Brits haul their boats out for the whole winter with mast down and everything. Many paints do not work after several months out of the water. It took me a while to unlearn the habit of hauling out for several months every year.

Re: oceangard antifouling?

We stay in but as yo say many do lift out for the winter to "dry out". However, how you dry out a hull in a wet cold soggy British winter is beyond me. We have a protected berth so the boat stays in. Also means we don't have to empty the boat of water or winterise the engine as the sea water temperature is just enough to stop ice forming when in the water. Ashore you would need to take extra precautions.

With us it's bi-annual. Our antifoul seems to be mostly worn off by then.

I think a lot of boats are hauled annually to do anodes and stuff.

I agree completely. We dont seem to have much of a hull cleaning industry down here( New Zealand). A lot haul annually and justify it by changing anodes. In places like Whitianga the locals tell me that you need to haul every year to antifoul. And that hard antifoul doesnt work there.
