Mast Hound

I am getting ready to install a staysail system on my boat and the only mast hound I can find is from WM. I ordered it and when it came in I was a little shocked to see how light weight it was. Am I wrong to think that it should be rather heavy duty to handle a storm sail in heavy winds ? I do admit that I tend to overbuild so maybe this part is ok WM#545707.

Re: Mast Hound

I think that's a dinghy's hound. You want something like this:

Rigging Only - External Mast Hound for 4.8x7.3 mast section 1/2" pins

or this:

Rigging Only - Wichard RIGGING ATTACHMENT TANG - 1/2 PIN

Are you planning on running backstays too?

What size boat are you installing this on?

The first item above (Mast Hound) is the one you want. Extra tangs each side for running backs would be very good, the tangs that are there are for the intermediate unless this is installed at or very near an upper spreader set. A sleeve thru the mast around the thru-bolt might be in order too so that you can't over-tighten the bolt.

The second item above (Attachment Tang) is light to medium duty and is intended to support things like a spinnaker pole topping lift, taking forestay loads would probably rip it off the mast in a short to medium amount of time.

Re: Mast Hound

Thank you funjohnson for the link, that is what I have been looking for. I just had a feeling the one from WM was for a dingy.
Peace
