Paint work is always an emotional roller coaster.

I absolutely despise the prep work - dirty, gritty, fumy and physically hard work (painful). I am always in a hurry to: beat weather, meet re-coat time windows or just to get it over with as soon as possible.

On the other hand, the application of the top coat brings a genuine state of euphoria. I absolutely love pulling the masking tape off and revealing the finished edges for the fist time. Also, it signals the end of a terrible nightmare

Currently, I am still in the nightmare phase. All the sanding and sandblasting was finished yesterday. I got a coat of primer on all the bare aluminum spots. The forecast for this afternoon calls for showers so I broke out the blue tarps.

I disagree, technology has eliminated welding in a lot of instances, carbon fiber, plastics. Heck... fiberglass boats have lessened the demand for welded ones....etc etc Just like the art of wooden boat building has nearly disappeared ... not due to automation, but to differnt methods of construction.

Here are a few more shots. If there is a particular thing you would like to see, just let me know and I will post.

Last shot shows the paint system that I used. In the foreground is a small container with a couple of holes in the lid. I used this to sprinkle the non-skid particles (glass bubbles) on to the (still wet) paint. About 1 quart of non-skid particles were used for all the decks and the main cabin house top.

Panope looks absolutely beautiful!!!

Holes for sprinkling the non skid particles were a good idea. I tried using a tea strainer when I repainted the deck around our anchor winch, but the particles came out in too big a quantity. In the end I sprinked by hand (a tip for anyone doing this - you need a non windy day ).

The recent completion of the exterior paint work has inspired me to consolidate several to-do lists that I had floating around.

The new list has 19 tasks. Most of the tasks will take 1 day or less to complete. Several are pretty time consuming such as wrapping up the interior carpentry.

Long ago, my family always had a great time aboard Panope during our local sport shrimp fishing season. It is my intention to launch the boat May 1st 2014 (whether these tasks are completed or not) in order to re-start that tradition.

In the near term, I will take a break from the boat for a while and focus on house carpentry projects.

A light at the end of the tunnel is clearly visible and it is definitely not a locomotive.

Color choice.

Panope's hull has always been black and as far as I am concerned it will always be black. I selected the white with green accent colors as a tip of the hat to Washington state's historical and current working boats.

Pic #1 - From the mid 1800's to roughly WWII, a network of private steamers and (later) diesel powered craft known as the "Mosquito Fleet" crisscrossed the Puget Sound carrying all kinds of passengers and light cargo.

Pic #2 - The Foss Tug company started in the late 1800's with a single white with green trim rowboat and grew to become the west coast's largest tug operator.

Pic #3 - I was 3 years old when the Walla Walla was brand spanking new (1972) and I thought riding on it was the greatest thing ever. Later, with one parent on one side of the Puget Sound and the other parent on the opposite side, I was riding these state run ferries just about every weekend .

i think the only thing you have messed up on was using 5200 on the windows.
4200 would have been better. or windshield adhesive.

It is true. The 5200 did not stick very well to the glass. Fortunately, The bezels that are glued (more 5200) on top of the glass are stuck really good

I cannot agree that this is the "only" mess up.

Shingles.

Ok, not a boat project, but sure is a great boat building material. Shingles are Alaska yellow cedar. Very tough and rot resistant.

Able to make some progress between rain and thunder showers.

Extra wide board (white) above shingle area will be the mounting point for roof rafters of a future storage shed.

Panope's mast is visible behind. Got to keep it nautical.
