That's actually not a bad idea!!! the only downside to it is that we will probably need another pump/faucet... we will end up with three: salt water (from ocean), potable water (from new small tank) and water (from bleached and existing tanks)

Just done this to our tank to take the guess work out and having to lift all the cushions to see into the clear inspection port.

With a water tank I'd tap into the bottom of the tank and attach a bit of food grade clear tubing up the side of the tank and use it as a "sight gauge".
(Doing that with a fuel tank would be dangerous of course)

It's not dangerous on a diesel tank, and is quite common. The proper approach is to thread in shutoff valve, top and bottom, with a length of clear polycarbonate tube between them, protected from accidental damage. The valves are normally closed and only opened for checking fuel level.

Maybe in the US of A a similar product to Crommelin's Water based bitumen is called "Liquid Rubber"?

What I was suggesting Leveche40 do on his water tank would be bloody dangerous on a fuel tank without the taps/valves but they cost around $A300.

I specifically didn't mention taps/valves on the water tank because they are not necessary.
