Epoxy Resin Guesstimate Request!

Got a couple projects coming up and want to make sure I'm not WAAAAAAY off target on my estimate of how much resin I need...

Using US 635 for this one...

1. To layup 15 sq yd or 135 sq ft of biax 1708

+

2. Cabosil thickened 2 peanut butter paste, 3/8"x10"x108"
(0.375x10x108=405 cu in/57.5 cu in/qt = 7 qt)

*** BONUS QUESTION***

Having never paid attention to cabo requirement per unit, as I usually make 1/2 qt max at a time... straight across measurement? i.e. 7 qt of cabo to make 7 qt of mix???

i generally use half kilo of resin,per square meter of 450gm cloth as a rough estimate.

thickening resin,generally 100g resin to 1X 500ml cup of silicon powder for glue,or 250ml for runny paste

Now imma hafta convert everything man!!!

I think we're on the same page... 450gm about 16oz, I think the biax is 710gm, or 25 oz. I had 2 lb/yd which is a only a little more than 0.8k/m

Your thickening numbers however work out PERFECT to mine... converting yours, I get 660g resin and 6.6L powder, and my number with qt/in/lb calculates out to 6.8L

0.8 kg per meter for the biaxial would be about right if it is 710gm/m

though if progerssively laminating with multiple cloth layers you will use a bit less per layer overall.

also remember with cure times temperature is is very critical,and adding silicon will speed up the cure time due to thixotropic heat build up,so do a small test batch before mixing up a 5kg batch!

2 Foam fill bottom
3 Fit
4 Wrap entire blade
5 Cut window, foam the interface joint

Goo = Leveling layer for keel rebed...

I'm gunna go buy a lottery ticket... Seems the engineer in me can't do simple math most of the time... (you never want me to tally a golf scorecard)

Our numbers or way closer than I expected... This is great Alex...

re the goop... I definitely figured it was going to be a 3 or 4 person event... I have had a hard time using a quart/L/k size batch without it running away...

It's gotta be mixed all at once to splooge out of a keel bed...

measure very carefully your 2 conponent pu foam requirements,in terms of the interiour volume of the rudder,you can allways add more!

another trick with pu foam is to put part a and b in the fridge before mixing,cooling the conponents will give you a 1-2 minutes more pour time before they start reacting.

having a mixing paddle on a powerdrill handy will also guarentee a better faster mix for both thickened epoxy if doing a lot,and your pu foam.

Super spot on confirmation... I've got 3.6 gal conservative without losses... That jives really well with the numbers Alex and I came up with...

Of course you coulda answered first and saved us the trouble...

Awesome Tips... pu foam pouring is an untested skill set for me... I'll have no access issues, so several small batches are the plan...

I think the fridge tip saved me some major grief... It is already starting to get hot here... 80f/26c

Now I just need to buy a crap drill motor so I don't turn the nice one's into the proverbial "yard drill"

i would put some cardboard and plastic sheeting down on that nice clean garage floor as well before you start!,and on any mixing surfaces!

Man oh man... Good thing the boss lets me do "government projects" sometimes! There was more than one "set the alarm for 3 hours" night...

If you cool the to foam it will expand less and fill less final volume. You would want the 16lb for rudders which expands less anyway. For large flotation areas you want it around room temp, mix fat and pour.
