Epoxy Anti Osmosi Treatment ONLY For Fresh Water??

Hi all,

during my boat research i've met a charter boys that when i asked if the boat has never had epoxy for preventive anti osmosis (a 2000 boat, not infusion hull but laminated) he told me that in sea water it has NOT to be done because sea water will ruin epoxy resins and the hull, while in fresh water is ok as it will protect the hull from the freshwater that will create osmosis/delamination...

It's the first time that i heard about this...Did i missed something?

What about people who get 5 layer of epoxy and 7 layer of coppercoat (a epoxy too) and then they are sure that for the next 25 years their boat would be nice??

Thanks
Stef

Thanks...as i thought
At least this one didn't complain that had to look for battery switch to unfurling a mainsail on a 38 ft boat...(happened with a French broker even the best was one some days ago that wanted me to make an offer BEFORE see the boat...like 10.000 euro for a visit LOL and never refound)

The best part was after my question he looked at me as "what the hell are you asking me?"...

Re: Epoxy Anti Osmosi Treatment ONLY For Fresh Water??

Anyone who thinks epoxy can be damaged by saltwater is just wrong. Epoxy is by any margins the prefered barrier coat against osmosis because it is both impermeable to water vapor (or as close as possible) and because it is non-reactive in salt and fresh water.

Proper application requirements vary a little by manufacturer and method (roll vs spray) but so long as they meet the manufacturers specifications the barrier coat should last decades. Really until the coating is mechanically damaged by sanding off the bottom paint on top of the barrier coat.

Many years ago I tried a copper loaded epoxy like Coppercoat. It might have been Coppercoat. It was a poor antifoulant and the boat latter developed blisters.
Interlux 2000 or Pettit's version do work at preventing blisters in salt water.

I've not experienced any problem with epoxy resin. Of course it always had bottom paint over it.
