Hello Daddle
Thanks for your advice. Since nothing is altered, I think I can leave the stainless bolts out of question. It's M6 bolts, but it's consealed under and behind two alu-pipes.

Thanks - I have no user applied compensation.

I still think it's in the magnets. The top-plate must come off and we will see.

From the photo, it looks like the magnet screws are mounted at the base of the compass housing, like one would expect to see on binnacle mounted compasses.
The plate the compass sits on does not need to be removed to work on or even remove the compass. It gets removed to access morse cables and/or steering chain...

looking at the photo I am certain that there are magnets in there,,,,,they just need to be adjuster,,,,,some of the magnets can hang on rods,,the rods might have broken,,,,,if you read bodwitch it will tell you how to do it,,,,but it is easier to hire someone to do this for you,,,takes about 1 hour if the compass is apart and easy to get to,,,,,you will need to take the boat out so you can swing it in 4 directions,,

Thanks. You are right. The magnet screws are at the bottom of the compass. What I want is to dismantle the compass from the steering column and se the compass from below and the compensating magnets state.

Yes, compensating magnets are always inside. BTW those gigantic spheres you see on old ship compasses are called Quadrantal Spheres and are are not magnets at all. They compensate for the greater amount of iron in the fore and aft direction of a ship

There are most likely some small screws around the edge of the black compass that connect it to the cylindrical base. Once the screws from the edge of the black top are removed, it should lift out - there will also most likely be a pair of wires for night-time lighting inside the cylinder and a connector on that pair to pull apart that you can see with the compass partially removed; unplug them so you can remove the compass completely.

Once you remove the compass, you should be able to see the magnets - on rods - in the cylindrical housing...
