However there are yards in the US be able to make a good alu hull. Kanter is - or was - one of them.
Just keeping the record straight.

Re: Cost of aluminum hull and deck?

Got it. Sorry.
For metal boats you have to come to this side of the pond.

Re: Cost of aluminum hull and deck?

Very good aluminium welders are world wide,

Companys weld in factorys to keep production up. And to keep their workers dry and out of the weather,

Mig can be used out doors, You just need a screen to stop the wind blowing the gas away.

But then you dont have to worry about the wind if you use fluxcored wire.

These prices are in Australia, I bought it all, Its all sitting in my yard, With a half completed hull.

Then man asked for a ballpark figure to buy the material For a cat,

My Gemini came along and I bought it instead, A lot cheaper than building mine,

I am getting old and have a use by date, So I bought my Gemini, I want to enjoy life, now that I have retired,

And to go further, I actually wanted to build it out of stainless, But stainless work hardens and sooner or later it would have panels dropping out of it,

And no, I am not getting into an argument about it,

These are the facts, Like it or not,

Cheers, Brian,

Re: Cost of aluminum hull and deck?

My model of my steel cat in the water,
It sits low in the water because the model is made of thick sheet steel,

It will weigh 17 ton finished, Loaded with engines. oil, sails, Etc Etc, ready to sail,

The picture of the red machine in the garage is a Lincoln remote Mig welder,
Change the wire and gas, and you can weld anything with it, It was also going on the boat as well.
I could do repairs for people any where, Retirement funds for me,
Its my design,
It is unsinkable, 8 water tite bulk heads, each one individually will keep the entire boat on the surface,
It has a displacement of 114 tons,
It has a hull speed of 54, Australia 2 had a hull speed of 68.
It has a draught of 800 mm
It has two 28 inch props, Home made by me,
I have built impellors and propellors to 4 metre diameter
It does 37.5 knots on one motor, and there is two.
It will have a full compliment of sail. Why motor if you can sail.
It will have a hydraulic drop down mast. gets me under bridges,
It will have every thing hydraulic, A ten year old kid can drive this one from the cock pit.
It is designed to sit on rocks and beaches with a 3 inch exposed keel,

As with any thing I design, It has to be versatile, Do every thing and then some, Hahahahaha

Cheers,
Brian,

VK Yacht AB - VK35

100k USD upwards, depending on stage and where you build it. That's for a 35'.

Quite expensive and above the top of what you can get in Holland.

Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

One of the metal boat builders that I have dealt with is Custom Steel Boats in Merritt, NC. They also build aluminum boats and are used to building yachts of yacht quality. Website: ::::: CUSTOM STEEL BOATS :::::. I am sure they would be happy to talk to anyone who has plans to build to.

Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

Look up origamiboats
Much of what is done is in steel but the designs and methods transfer to aluminum easily.
Aluminum is not that hard to work with.
I personally prefer steel but that is just me.

Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

Frameless building is practiced in Holland as long as steelboats exist. You can build even without a cradle. Frames you may weld in later. What you need is a small crane or the like or a forklift to help the sheets up.
If you are a bit handy (with steel) and you have a plasma cut steelpack you can get up a casco within 2-3 weeks. After that you can finish the welding in time.

Re: Cost of Aluminum Hull and Deck ?

You can pull it together with come-a-longs.
The mistake many make is to weld long continuous welds and warp the material.
