C & C Landfall 35 rudder assembly

Does anyone know how this assembly is arranged? I believe my rudder stock is bent because the steering is stiff. The steering cables and quadrant are OK. I'm thinking that I need to replace the rudder and bearings but have no idea what kind of bearings are required. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: C & C Landfall 35 rudder assembly

The problem could be as simple as some monofilament fishing line wrapped around the rudder shaft & causing binding in the bearing. Or perhaps your bearings have swollen over time, enough to cause binding in the steering. That or a host of other things. Which, you’d do well to read the below thread in order to get a better idea of some of the possible causes, & how to diagnose them. And to do so without having to pull the rudder out of the boat. http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...em-185017.html

No idea on the assembly. If you didn't run rudder aground or hit something I doubt your stock is bent. My tartan had a stiff rudder after I bought boat (not caught on survey which was in light breeze) which was a seized lower rudder roller (jefa) bearing. Dropped rudder, replaced bearing.
I'd focus on rudder bearings...

Re: C & C Landfall 35 rudder assembly

Asking this question on the CnC list (cnc-list.com) would be best, but most likely you don't have a bent stock. If the LF35 is anything like the LF38, it doesn't have a below-water rudder bearing like some boats do. On the LF38 it's just a long fiberglass rudder tube, with a donut bearing above deck in the cockpit which you can easily visually inspect yourself.

The rudder tube should be greased, and normally has a grease cup below decks (aft stbd on mine) which you can check / turn to inject more grease. Some people like zerc fittings. It sounds like your rudder stock grease might be old and caked up.

Re: C & C Landfall 35 rudder assembly

I owned a 35 Mk III. Like the LF 38, no bearing, just a tube with a Zerc fitting.

The rudder post is stainless, so unless you hit something really hard it is not bent. You might check the top bearing to make sure the bolts are tight and the delrin ring has not worn.
