Re: Building the fastest sailboat ever !

Appreciate all the comments....good and bad. To let ya know I am kind of one of those guys that the more ya tell me I cant do it.....drive me even harder to do it. once I get the hull and pontoons done I will probably post some pics.....but if ya see it right now ... Even I think I am a bit crazy. This will be more of a "pod racer" ... if ya google kite boat....that is what I am kind of going for.

Simple-
Buy a Corsair 28 or a Gunboat 55-which ever your wallet can float.
Either is fast enough to scare the crap out of sofa sailors.

A kite rig will be the slowest, unfortunately, as your boat, to beat the records, will always have to sail extremely close to the apparent wind, which will be kite-shredding, on the nose multiples of the true wind speed. Kites can't get anywhere near that with their 45-50deg. apparent wind limit.

Research ice boat rigs: stiff, full-battened minimally cambered sails. Just as the foiling America Cup monos cats have...

Re: Building the fastest sailboat ever !

Just a update.....boat is mostly cut up (Man I hate fiberglass) but too ugly to post pictures yet. I see it in my head but just not in front of me yet.
Trying to do all this on a budget so...since I live in a bay with about 200 boats...yesterday i went over and dragged a pipe under about 30 boats....found two 20 foot aluminum pipes on the seabed.....In other words now I saved a few bucks on the aluminum frame. Time to go diving again.
alas....next week I start pulling boats out for the fall, so after about 6 weeks and 150 boats I need to deliver....I will set up all in the garage to start fiberglass and welding.

I do have to say the "Flyin' Hawaiian" thread on Sailing Anarchy was one of the most entertaining threads I have ever read..

Don’t listen to these naysayers, just do it. If it works then great. If it does not work then you have learned something along the way. Put it on YouTube you’ll soon have thousands of followers and enough money to buy a fast boat.

Re: Building the fastest sailboat ever !

You probably ought to tune into the Multihull Forum on BoatDesign.net. Lots of deabte there on how to make fast boats, especially small foiling boats.
One guy has experimented with what sounds suspiciously like a 'pod racer' design similar to what you may be proposing.
In theory, there is no reason why a foiling tri should not be fast, but as the French speed record boats have proven, you need a looooong and light narrow hull with similarly loooong 'pods' and preferably around 80% beam-to-length ratio - and then add foils....
OK, so that's a massive over-simplification, but if you took (for argument sake) a foiling Moth, lenghtened it to 1i8' and added 'pods' to it to make it a tri, pods also having foils....might be a 'thing'....
Am I somewhere close to the design concept...???

Re: Building the fastest sailboat ever !

Foiling aquatic sailcraft (hard for me to call them boats) need two things to be effective. Lightness and comparitive rigidity.

Using your proposed method of construction, those two are mutually exclusive; panels cut from existing mass-produced 'skiboats' will be heavy, and the amount of glass required to join them together strongly enough for your intended use will likely double their weight .

Better to bite the bullet up front and use 1/4" coosa as your panels to build the hull and pods and foils, and then glass them inside and out with the appropriate laminate schedule, thereby saving weight, adding strength and using less material. Good quality polyester resin is quite sufficient for your purposes.

Re: Building the fastest sailboat ever !

ok....4 weeks later and 282 boat deliveries, mostly Pontoons all put away for the year. Now time to get busy on this project...
So all the comments "it'll be too heavy and a planning hull will not work...."
Well a picture is better than words so this is what I was thinking....

Re: Building the fastest sailboat ever !

What I was trying to say is that I think I have it light enough...I plan to add 3 feet more on the aft. . I will post the frame once I have it built.

My whole idea was to use this old planning boat to make a oversized kayak/ trimaran with foils and sails.
