Question White Exhaust Water

I have a farymann diesel, 1 cylinder in a sailboat I recently aquired. it is raw water cooled and had not been started for about 18 months prior. in the last 30 days that I have been working on the boat and run the engine the exhaust is chalky white. there is not a visible sheen on the water and the chalkiness dissipates quickly in the water. I have run the engine for 15-30 minute periods and the color of water does not clear up. I have plumbed a fresh water flush system into the intake hose and hoped that may clear things up.

the engine oil does not indicate water intrusion.

anybody know what the chalky white water means?

Re: white exhaust water

Air or exhaust gas bubbles, capture some in a bucket and do the the old fashion sniff test on it.

+1. Bubbles. Capture some exhaust water in a clear glass pitcher and watch it clear up in just a handful of seconds.

Most likely Calcification,,,with use it will clear up,,,,but double check for intrusion in oil and fuel system.

Re: white exhaust water

If you have an air leak on the intake side of the raw water pump, it will aerate the water. Of course it should leak water when it's not running

Re: white exhaust water

Diesel Exhaust Smoke:

WHITE SMOKE - Misfiring cylinders; water in fuel; air in fuel; water in cylinders (blown head gasket, cracked head or liner); lack of compression.

BLACK SMOKE - Restricted air flow (dirty / obstructed air filter; plugged exhaust; restrictions in exhaust system; defective turbo / supercharger); Overload; Improper injection (poor atomization, injector dribble, late injection)

BLUE SMOKE - Worn or stuck piston rings; worn valve guides and stems; high crankcase pressure; worn / supercharger oil seals.

Re: white exhaust water

When my tranny oil cooler failed, it allowed tranny oil to seep into the cooling water. Small white drops appeared in the exhaust discharge, dissippated very quickly on the water. Check your tranny oil.
