What Kind of Yanmar Engine Is this?

My wife and I recently assumed possession of a previously abandoned 1971 Hunter 30. The boat needs an incredible amount of work. For starters, the engine doesn't have a water pump. I believe the engine is a 'one-lung' Yanmar diesel. However, I have no idea what model or roughly how old the engine is. In order to purchase the appropriate H2O pump, I was wondering if somebody could chime in and share their knowledge/expertise. Is there a model number anywhere on the engine itself? Here are pictures of the engine:

Thanks for the advice. I will check again, although as I have dug around in the engine, it appears repainted, and I have not seen a anything on the bell housing....

This is a Yamnar YSE 8 or YSE 12.
The later YSM series has a Bosch type injection pump.

Re: What Kind of Yanmar Engine Is this ?

Thanks folks. Very helpful! And yes, Cheechako, it looks like it has a single horizontal cylinder. Gordmay, i'll check out the manual, order the H20 pump, and see if we can get this thing running.

Re: What Kind of Yanmar Engine Is this ?

I'd suggest you swap it out for a two cylinder engine, you'll want the power and thank me for the suggestion in the long run. It'll ultimately be less work than fixing the one you've got I suspect - and if that one runs, for sure, someone will buy it. I sold an old Yanmar 2QM20 needing a rebuild (incl trannie, starter and alternator) on eBay for $1200 plus shipping a few years back, so there's a market.

What the heck, you can rebuild it on your kitchen table! yes it is a rough running little guy, but it'll get get you where you need to go. It would be a tough deal to put a new engine ($) in a free boat... But as Canucksailor said if this is going to be a long term, oft used, boat...maybe worth it...

Re: What Kind of Yanmar Engine Is this ?

Appreciate the comments from both Canucksailor and Cheechako. I think this is just a starter boat so we'll be rebuilding the engine in order to gain the experience and just get something that works. Our main goal is to gain some experience and liveaboard for a year or two without spending too much money on an abandoned boat.

I guess the next time I post a pic of the exact model I should not be so discrete (where is that sarcasm font when you need it?)

Gee, and I thought a 3 cylinder Volvo was rough.
I guess I'm spoiled !
Our previous boat had a Yanmar 3hm35f and ran like a clock.
It WAS smooth, but the boat displaced almost five times what my Dragonfly does but I digress.

Re: What Kind of Yanmar Engine Is this ?

I raced for years in a boat with one of these little guys. always ran good, but rough at low rpm! Then again...it is one cylinder! My Contessa 26 had a Bukh 1 cyl, but it want so rough at idle. A lot easier to get parts for the Yanmar though!
