Wanted- Volvo Penta MD7A

Looking for running condition Volvo Penta MD7A. Trying to avoid biting the bullet for new motor for another couple of years.

I have one. Where are you?

They are expensive while in running condition. Better get two dead ones and canibalize.

Located in Mobile, AL.
I have 2 dead green beasts already. Raw water cooling just is not friendly to these old motors. Exhaust manifold on both are shot.

Too far. We are in the Canaries.

Put the two together and convert to fresh water cooling? Level: Easy.

? do / no do ?

New elbow USD 150. Still available. They last some 10 years.

BTW the elbow is always raw water, also when engine is cooled via the exchanger.

I had one also (lost in a fire) that was fresh water cooled, but the extra pump eliminated the hand crank feature which I feel is important. I have since discovered that 12 volt water pumps work fine for the hot coolant and you can still have the hand crank available. If you lost all of your 12 volt system you do a little plumbing and convert back to raw water until you get sorted out. Keep both temperature thermostats available. I am an old Volvo fan. ____Grant.

Yep. MD7 great stuff a shame no longer available new.

You know that was before they converted to Perkins blocks and all that crap.

I would buy a new one.

But a new one now it is only a Bukh, I think.

And yes. Ours is electric pump convesion.

But I never used the hand crank in 15 years now. Simply this engine starts.

Re: Wanted- Volvo Penta MD7A

I have the fresh water cooling on mine. Had the same problem, but moved the pump and ran a belt to the flywheel. Changes the gearing, but haven't had it eating up impellers, seems to work so far. Been using it this way for about a year, now. Leaves the hand crank option available, too.

Re: Wanted- Volvo Penta MD7A

I have one in good working order . Ready to sell. I tried to respond earlier but as I am new to this I can't be certain it went through.
The engine just came out of my Columbia 9.6. Based in northern Michigan. If interested contact me at struf@freeway.net for details. I'm able to ship to Mobile

I have a md7 .It is raw water cooled. There is not coming much water throuh the engine. Is it possible too put an electric waterpump instead of the impellapump ? And would that solve the problem with the cooling water ?

Re: Wanted- Volvo Penta MD7A

This engine is known for relatively low cooling water thru-put.

I do not know how little is too little (suggesting water channels blocked with scale or debris) BUT even at 100% clean it is way less water than a comparable small Yanmar.

If your engine is not overheating, maybe the small amt of water is actually OK. The amt is bound to the revs too. Slow revs = small amt.

Check your engine temp. You can also test the exhaust water temp by hand. It is always fine to touch, never very hot, in our boat.

I have one with a Walter V drive. 1981 and came with a recently purchased Cape Dory 30. Repowering so no need for it. For parts. Needs a top end and various other issues. Best offer. Located in New Brunswick but sailing down Maine soon. Where are you?

Is the v-drive available? I just bought a boat with md7a and v-drive. The dip stick on the v-drive alway shows way too full. I've changed the oil 4-5 times and soon after it is overflowing. It doesn't look like water cuz water usually separates and it is obvious but this is just black fluid . It's not oil coming from the engine. I think it has to be water. Why isn't it separating from the oil
