Volvo D2 55 coolant leak

Noticed a smell and saw anti freeze leaking out of the water pump. Looking at the front of the engine at the water pump there is a small maybe 1/2 inch pipe leading out the right side with a rubber cap held on by a hose clamp. The cap is leaking and will be replaced. I guess my question is could there be a underlying cause for the cap to fail? Excess pressure? Anyone else had it fail? Seems way to easy to get away with a $13 part, not my luck. Thanks, Jim
