trying to identify westerbeke engine

my friend has a 41-foot 1983 Pearson. it is powered by a 55 horsepower westerbeke engine. we are trying to identify the base motor. Does anybody know the original manufacturer of this motor? does westerbeke make any of its own base Motors?

Re: trying to identify westerbeke engine

If it's a Westerbeke 55 A, B, C, or D, it is probably a Isuzu 4LE1 base engine.

Re: trying to identify westerbeke engine

The 55A has a curious history. Originally a Perkins block modified by Mitsubishi then marinized by Westerbeke.

Westerbeke are among the nastiest people in the marine business, They do sneaky things like use a standard Sherwood water pump">raw water pump and modify it to fit their uneccessarily modified mounting bracket so you can no longer use a standard Sherwood, they then quadruple the price of the pump. They go to great lengths to used odd shaped hoses with different diameter ends when a much simpler arrangement could have been used. The 55A lower heat exchanger hose can be bought for $20 at an autoparts store if you are willing to invest the time or you can buy one from Westerbeke for $350.

Re: trying to identify westerbeke engine

I will try and get pictures. I have a westerbeke generator in my boat... a circulating water pump from westerbeke is $350. I determined what motor it was, it's a Mitsubishi 3 cylinder and was able to buy a circulating water pump off of eBay for $69. exact fit just no red paint
they certainly are proud of their parts
