Penta D1-30 with 130S saildrive low RPM

Hello, I have almost new (about 40-50 hours) Penta D1-30 with 130S saildrive. Full throttle should be 3200RPM, but engine produces just 1900-2000RPM. At neutral engine's full throttle reaches 3500RPM. Oil level in both engine and saildrive are normal. No leaks, no strange sounds. Please help.

Sounds like a fouled prop. Check it for heavy growth and make sure there's no line wrapped around it.

Probably unrelated, but make sure the oil in the saildrive is single-weight engine oil and not ATF.

I believe the wt oil in the sail drive is 70/90. I have a Volvo with a sail drive and that is the recommendation on oil wt. in the manual.

Re: Penta D1-30 with 130S saildrive low RPM

The S130 specs single weight engine oil. Some of the older S120 drives used multi weight gear oil 75/90.

The OP's problem could be fouled bottom, fouled prop (as mentioned), or the prop could be improperly sized.

First things first. Has it EVER reached 3000 or 3200 rpm in gear? Which way does the prop turn (looking from astern) when the boat goes forward?

Cleaned fouled prop. Nothing changed. Now full throttle 2100-2200RPM. Any ideas?
Prop is 3 blade Volvo 17x12.

Is the fuel lever on the pump moving against the stop at full throttle? Is the engine black smoking at full load?

Size 40ft, weight ~6T, year manufactured 2014. Engine is only 40-50 hours of running, so I haven't checked exhaust line. I suppose if the exhaust line would be blocked, it wouldn't reach 3500RPM in neutral.

Boat is second hand, so I don't know. It should be standard prop rotation direction.

But something has changed; you gained 10 percent RPM. Given that the engine is so new and that it reaches rated RPM in neutral, doesn't overheat or smoke, I'd start by assuming it's seriously overpropped (even though smoking and overheating are sometimes symptoms of overpropping). If you can determine the pitch and diameter you have now, there are prop calculators on line that will see if you're in the ball park for your particular engine and hull. If the pitch and diameter are close to the calculator recommendation, start looking for other problems.

Also, did you pull the prop to make sure nothing's wrapped between the prop and the saildrive housing?

I get paid for fixing or spotting things that are not as they "should" be in a new boat. If you have the wrong hand of prop and cables reversed to compensate then you will have incorrect forward ratio.

If things were as they "should" be you would not be asking the question

Cheers
