Outboard Engine Mounts.

Can anyone recommend a decent outboard mount/bracket. The one I have now is a real PITA to use. I have to hang 1/2 way off the stern to grab the release handle for raising and lowering, and I have to use a large screwdriver to pry it loose from position slots. I am hauling the boat out pretty soon for a bottom job and I want to replace this one.

The boat is a Islander 26 with a Tohatsu 20" shaft.

The one I have now works really well for my 54 lb Mercury 5hp 4 Stroke Outboard with 25" Shaft. It has 14" of travel and is adjustable. It looks something like this:

If I were going to buy one today though, I'd buy this one. Both are spring loaded and the engine will come right up once you push the release handle. This one though is a bit stiffer/more heavy duty.

Btw, one of the boats from our dock was dismasted last Saturday Night by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. He was on a small S2 with deck stepped mast. Winds W maybe 35 knots. Tide ripping outward.

He says his motor wouldn't start, and his crew was useless. I'm just glad they didn't hit one of the Islands. The rocks are huge and very slippery.

The Coast Guard pulled them in as I understand it.

Point is be careful with the bridge. It can sneak up on you.

I've always used brackets made by Garelick. If you want the ultimate easy lift, they make a hydraulic lift with a long handle.

Their spring assisted lift mounts are very well made as well. Just be sure to get one rated for the weight of your engine. Don't get one too big or you'll have to work to push the engine down against the springs.

Ditto, go with Garelick!

They have several different models. I've had a couple of the SS ones and they worked great. You can get models for different weights of motors and they are adjustable for what ever transom angle, within a fairly close vertical position.

Being wide they don't get that swaying motion like the old aluminum ones.

Thanks for the responses guys..... I really appreciate it. All of the mounts you guys are showing are 10X better than what I have on the boat right now. Both the Panther and the Garelick have nice grab handles, where mine is a little tiny knob that is very hard to grab with my XLarge hands.
