From direct knowledge of someone who did the same thing and didn't notice until too late... You would've needed a new engine.

I changed my oil the other day and don't feel the OP mistake is as "dumb" as it sounds. It seems to me based on the small print on the filter and poor labeling of the box it comes in that the whole thing is a setup to get to you to make the mistake.

Yes, they can be very hard to differentiate unless you look closely.

We all make them.
I ran my own construction company , one of my consultants made a major "muck up", there was no argument he just said this one is mine.!! I never used anyone else in his profession , he was a great guy.
Years ago we met a chap in Gulf Harbour marina who besides being a yottie, ran a sheet metal fab shop. We needed to replace our two water tanks, and he said he could handle the job. Came over to our boat, did the measurements (somewhat involved, since the tanks were quite oddly shaped) and two days later we drove up to Auckland and collected them. Brought the starboard one down to the boat and it slipped lnto place perfectly. Brought the second one down... and it was another starboard tank. Called the shop, and our friend was mortified, and loudly used "harsh language" to describe the fool who had built it. Went back the next day to collect the second attempt. When we walked in, he stopped all the guys working, gathered them together and said something like " the chap who built the tank did it just as shown on the drawing, drawn by an idiot... ME"... in front of his whole crew.

I was impressed by his humble apology... and the new tank fit correctly
