MD7A (or similar) throttle cable ideas--fabrication?

Hi All! Thanks for the wonderful help. You guys are better than the mechanics.

I need two parts (and MD7A OR other method pictures) and/or ideas.

The coupling AND the coupling mount for my MD7A throttle cable-to-throttle is missing. I need to replace it with a used one or have something fabricated.

I went to NAPA figuring they would have something from a car that would work and they said that this method--of cantilevering a "bracket" to move the throttle has not been used on cars since the 60s. Strike #1.

These parts from Volvo are obsolete: Strike #2.

I really can create something if I can see what the original part looks like OR something similar.

The Volvo schematic I have is not exact (that is all there is), but it will give you an idea of the part.

Help.

Thanks.

Basic fabrication project. A small piece of flat stock steel from Home Depot or such place will work. The clamp that holds the cable should be from Teleflex as there is a groove in the cable housing for the clamp.

Take the ball stud out of the throttle arm, get a nut that fits the ball stud that is attached to the cable and mount it in place of the removed ball stud.

Buy or fabricate one of these:

Morse Cable Clamp

to hold the body of the cable to the cable mount.

^^ Is there a reason you cant just put the new threaded cable end shown directly in place of the rusty Ball pin that is shown on the engine? Then all you need is the morse cable clamp (which should be readily available) and a place to drill and tap for that cable clamp to hold the cable sheath from moving.

Yep. The thought had crossed my mind and I will try this if I can't get the cable clamped securely with a cantilevered fitting.

Unfortunately the ball in the end of the cable is not a strong connection--it slips out readily and it seems to have been designed that way.

More will be revealed.

Re: MD7A (or similar) throttle cable ideas--fabrication?

Are you trying to reverse the cable throw?

If not, the cable mounts on the bracket 16 as shown in your parts diagram. The arm 24 appears to be (even though they don't look the same) the part, shown in your first photograph, that has the old ball stud in it now.

The ability to easily remove the new ball joint is a feature, so that one can disconnect the cable without tools for service.

Fixed joints are also available:

I've tried to draw in on your picture where the cable and clamp mounts, pardon me if I'm stating the obvious, and please excuse the shitty drawing, mice aren't very good drawing tools...

Think tractor, farm implement, caterpillar throttle cable connections and you'll find something at your local dealers.

Anyway, this is a another fixed ball joint (not from pacificcustoms);

Good call. I forgot about tractor supply shops. I do that tomorrow. There is also a nice fleet dealer where I had my battery cables crimped; they may have some workable parts.

Thanks for the website link. I'll check it out.

The parts I need--which is what makes this so frustrating, are not correctly depicted in Volvo's schematic and nobody has pictures (that I have found) on the internet of these parts from an MD7A.

Volvo revamped the MD7A's throttle mounting attachments after they made their schematic and I have newer (but still MD7A) version.

Besides pictures, I have also searched videos of MD7As and nobody shows these parts well.

I need the cantilevered bracket holder that fits in those two holes on the engine in the pic and the rocker-type arm that connects the cable to the engine's throttle.

Anybody with an MD7A feel free to take a few pictures of your throttle cable-throttle coupling for me. I would be grateful.

When I get this figured out I will take good pictures to show you what I rigged up.

Thanks!

Re: MD7A (or similar) throttle cable ideas--fabrication?

Hello Eric,

The info provided by Jim Bunyard is correct, all you need to do is follow it.

Find yourself a teleflex or morse "camel back" cable clamp and secure the cable outer housing just as shown in Jim' s sketch. The bracket on the engine is already there. Then remove the old existing ball joint from the throttle arm on the injection pump and deep six it. Shorten the threaded portion of the new ball joint so it doesn't hang up on anything and install it where the old ball joint was......and you are finished. Forget the two threaded holes in the injection pump housing....they were not used for anything.

While you are messing around with cables, you should hook up a cold start cable to the cold start arm under the injection pump, as also shown on your schematic.

Cheers,
DougR
