MD11-D Wet or dry sleeve

Hello,

I'm in the process of rebuilding my MD11-D.

Are the cylinder sleeves wet or dry?

They're not easy to push out and I'd like to leave it alone but if they're wet I might have to avoid leaks.

Hello,
The MD 11 had wet cylinder liners. If I recall correctly, one O ring in the crankcase below the cylinder to keep oil down, one O ring in the cylinder casting at the bottom to keep water in, and a small O ring under the top liner flange to keep water in up there.

I rebuilt my 17 a few yrs ago. You can rap on the jacket with a deadblow and separate the liner. If stuck a press would do it. I would definately do this since its apart anyway. Also there are most likely shims between the block and each jacket. If youre reusing the liners, be sure each liner goes back into its respective jacket and the same jacket goes into each hole using the same shims. If you buy new liners, youll have to go through the measurement process stipulated in the book. Marine Parts Express has all the schematics and part numbers online. I also bought a lot of my parts throgh them. Verify all parts needed are available. For example, be sure the injector coppers in the heads are good or available. I think i got the last 3 (MD 17) on the planet but ended up not having to use them.

I don't know the MD-11D but I do know that generaly when reassembling wet sleeve engines, each wet sleeve should be set up some thousands of an inch ABOVE the top of the block. This is to allow the cylinder head to compress the sleeves onto the O rings when it is torqued down. This is very important to prevent leaks of water into oil etc. It's something you should check out with your particular engine.....I always thought an MD11 was a development of the DC10 aircraft.
