Looking for Westerbeke 30 /4-91 Heat Exchanger Rubber End Cap

Hello to all! New to this forum so please bear with me. I'm bringing back to life the Gypsy Queen which has been on the hard for much too long. She is powered by a Westerbeke 30. The rubber end cap of the heat exchanger is not useable. to my dismay Westerbeke has discontinued this part and superseded with a $1500 replacement, expensive by even their standards. Does anybody know where I can find this item? Part number 23169

There are replacement after market heat exchangers to fit most engines. I know you need a cap, but you either have to find a used heat exchanger or make a cap.
There is a moldable rubber 2 part mix that car restorers use to make no longer in production rubber parts. Also ebay always has someone parting out engines.
These guys make heat exchangers. They list a couple Westerbekes. Maybe their cap fits the stock exchanger. New exchanger about $500.

Re: Looking for Westerbeke 30 /4-91 Heat Exchanger Rubber End Cap

Thank You Lepke for the reply and links to after market heat exchangers, will most likely go that route. Making an end cap would be difficult since there is metal sandwiched in the part and a lip internally to separate the 2 fluid flows, probably why design was abandoned. Also thanks for the welcome GordMay! This site may become my new best friend, with the recommissioning of Gypsy Queen as my winter home in Florida and beyond!

Call Lenco... they sent me ones for my westerbeke for free. BTW - their aftermarket coolers are a fraction of the price and just as well built.

Same problem. You can get a pipe cap at Lowe's/HD that will fit over the top and 5200 them together, then hoseclamp the assembly in place. I got lucky and found a spare at a consignment shop. BTW, do not pay Westerbeke prices for anything. All parts (except these frickin' marinize parts) are available MUCH cheaper. This engine is a BMC 1.5, for all non diesel specific parts, shop for parts for an old MGA 1500. For the diesel parts, try a Leyland 154 tractor. Rebuilding one now. Piston without rings/wrist pin from Westerbeke $500, set of 4 with rings, etc for tractor $400. MGA head gasket $341 vs $15, Rocker arm shaft $358 vs $12.

Re: Looking for Westerbeke 30 /4-91 Heat Exchanger Rubber End Cap

I do not believe this is correct. I would be delighted to be wrong, since Bowman still has end caps available.

There are 2 different styles of heat exchangers with this engine. They are different than what Bowman supplies (part #BL180-3318) for the BMC 1.5 block upon which this engine is based. Here is a pic of the Bowman unit. It is not the same as either Westerbeke unit. This replacement is still available for ~1000 USD, but then you have to figure out the intake manifold which in integral with the Westerbeke unit.

BINGO!

Remembered that the other style was made by Sen-Dure. The part #15799 seems still to be available, $1500+ from Westerbeke. Lo and behold, made by SenDure as well. I will see if they have end caps available. This has been my engine's Achilles heel as I have my final spare installed now.

Try these guys they run about $350 and are much better than the original. I put one on my Westerbeke W50 and is running cooler than ever. Plus they don't have that crazy end cap. Their's is just a flat gasket.

I hate fine print! From the 15799-

"Please note that this part is not intended for salt water."

I been using 15799 for over 12 years in saltwater, they're USA made out of marine grade material. When I bought mine they were great and knew the application was saltwater, I would give them a call. I bet an error. The quality is very good and the fit was right on. Note there are two different sizes to the 15799 from Westerbeke, need to verify.
