Heat Exchanger Failure

We are currently in Black Point, Bahamas, and it seems that the heat exchanger has failed. As I have salt water coming out of the over-flow tube. I tasted the water coming out, and discovered it to be salt.
My question is does the heat exchanger come apart to be repaired, or is it a complete failure? I have the old 18hp perkins engines, so ANY experience/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Heat Exchanger Failure

Most heat exchangers are cases and tubes that are soldered together. When the "high-priced" outfits clean the units, they disassemble the components and then resolder. It's not a big job but it takes someone who can braize or solder. Where you are could put you abit far from a shop. Where is Black Point? Abacoa's or Exuma? Bob

Black Point is just below Staniel Cay in the Exumas.

Re: Heat Exchanger Failure

Depending on the model and make of the heat ex-changer, your problem could be anything from an end plate seal to corroded tube pack. Most come apart but some types can only be rebuilt by someone who has the right tools. If you have an end cap it can be removed and the tube pack inspected. At that time check the seals which are usually the first point of failure.
