First oil change. Need store/supplies near MDR/King Harbor

I'm about to tackle my first oil change (Universal 5416) on my new to me boat. She's in MDR, but I live close to King Harbor too. I need everything to get the job done except basic tools. Looking for a local store/supplier, or if I need to order online.

I would rather support small local businesses, or go online and have it all shipped to me. I visited the WM in MDR on Sunday, and well if I never have to go into that strip mall again, it will still be too soon (although I know I will have to, probably sooner than I hope).

When I was stationed in MDR in the 90s, I used to run to a marine hardware store around the San Pedro side of St Vincent Thomas Bridge to pick up supplies. I don't think it's there anymore (it actually may be a WM now), but it's the sort of place I'm looking for. If anybody knows what I'm talking about.

Yeah. It is a West Marine now. But nice folks there. The manager is Maria. Very nice.

There used to be an independent marine store in MDR but it too is gone now.

Dunno if I'd order oil online. But y'all are definitely free to. Hey, you own a boat is socal. You will be going to WM from time to time. I'm no huge fan, but for oil? It'd work.

Down here behind the orange curtain, there's Orange Engine for some stuff. There's a small chandlery at Dana Point Shipyard. I don't remember MDR well enough to know anything but the WM. WM has a better stock.

For oil you could also just go to your favorite PepBoys/O'Rileys/AutoZone.

I got my mityvac oil extractor thing from Rock Auto.

I guess WM/Online it is. I should have prefaced the OP with, "Yes, I am aware WM exists but, are there any other options...".

I see the SHIPS STORE in MDR was actually right in front of my slip, that would have been super convenient!

Ah "chandlery", I was having a brain fart coming up with that term to search, thanks.

For a simple oil/filter change, you can get everything that you will need at any auto parts store. The only difference in buying at a chandlery is a higher price for the same things.

I try to buy everything from CC marine and West marine. I know they are big Corps. but they employ a lot of local people. With the shipping and the wait time. and the risk of getting the wrong part, I find that the savings of ordering online is not enough. The mall can be crowded,a perfect excuse to ride the bike. P.S. I'll look for you I'm out past the charthouse

I second the auto parts store, get a good quality filter and good Diesel oil.
Only thing you need from a Marine Store is the vacuum canister to suck the oil into.

Actually the WM manager in MD is Jose... the in store port supply girl is Monica ..and the community port supply rep is Mona......
Suck out the old oil with a vacuum canister and change the filter with a filter wrench. Don't forget to put a smear of oil on the gasket.

The store in San Pedro is still there (I go there frequently):

Icon International Inc
Marine Supply Store
Address: 345 N Beacon St, San Pedro, CA 90731
Phone310) 831-9261

They supply the commercial boats, and have just about anything you need... usually way less than WM.

Thanks! I saw that on Google maps, but it didn't ring any bells. I guess it has been 20 years...

Yep, definitely the place. http://www.sdmarinehardware.com/aboutus.asp

Re: First oil change. Need store/supplies near MDR/King Harbor

If what you need is "basic tools" I still lean toward Sears for value.
When quality and stiffness counts like for fuel injection lines I bite the bullet and find the Snap On dealer. I wish I could afford a whole set of Snap On tools...

I buy fuel whole sale for my land. (My sister says it's less than a thousand acres so I can't call it a "Ranch" in Wyoming. It's WAY less than 1K acres!) They deliver red fuel and oil by the barrel to my shop. When I needed just a few gallons of car oil my guy said to buy it at Wally world. Even by the case he couldn't match their price.

Other and auto supply which will have most of what you need. Another place you might try is Redondo Marrine Hardware, just outside of King Harbor on Catalina Av.
