Crystals in exhaust

Hi All,

Looking for some advice. We recently removed the exhaust riser on our engine and discovered these crystals in the exhaust outlet on the block.

There is only one thing I can think of that it might be. Last summer our exhaust high-rise snapped due to a faulty weld and with no pressure to push it out some cooling water backed up into this area. I thought we would have noticed this at that time if it was there then, but maybe we overlooked it? Any other ideas what could cause this?

The engine runs fine, no smoke or anything. Any input appreciated.

Any idea of what the consequences might be? I'll clean it up and I hope there is no new source of salt water getting in there.

Clean and hope ;-) We had something similar happen (corroded-through injection elbow) and no trouble later. I also think that when one notices this (water leak while running motor) it is probably best to first close the seacock, wait until no more water comes out exhaust thru-hull and only then shut down engine. Might cost you an impeller but should prevent water backing up. I hope I remember that next time it happens ;-)

Thanks. Clean and hope was our proposed strategy I'm glad to hear that someone else's engine has survived the same problem.
