Does the sponge of the 2gm20f serves any purpose?
The metal cage as i know it, is the silencer. There aren't sand/dust in marine environment like those on roads to need intake filter right?

Hmm.... well my boat often has dusty bilges so there is some dust around. More after I have been sanding .

I would be hesitant to remove it but others might hold different opinions!

Vacuum it up and be done with it! Y'all don't want moisture collecting airborne detritus nestling next your hull! in this case the smile is a big smirk.

When I bought my boat the 3GM30 installed had nothing left of the sponge inside the air filter housing, just the metal frame and it ran OK. I have since replaced it during a general engine overhaul.

It leads me to think that the sponge disintegrated at some point and all the fragments flew into the cylinder so It might be a good idea to do away with the sponge altogether.

I've lost several sponges into the engine over the years. So was thinking why not just do without it?
Each replacement cost US$20.

There is dust in a boat, dust does have an effect on engine life, although there isn't much dust, but sometimes there is belt dust too, either way I'd rather not have that stuff go through my engine, foam included. I haven't done it yet, but I intend to install a K&N cone filter on mine as it's oiled cotton gauge with a "million mile" warranty, they will last a very long time.

The only people who really know if you need it or not are the people who designed and built the engine... and they put it there... even at extra cost to themselves. I'd keep it.

A rational notion indeed.

It appears the sponge is getting a negative perspective because it dried to dust, and was sucked into the engine. On the contrary; there are those who have replaced the sponge as part of their maintenance schedule and have avoided such failures.

It's good to read the posts herein to help one acquire a better understanding of the topic.

Some questions to consider:

What would be the best practice for me (the reader) to protect the engine in my boat?

Does the practice warrant the expenditure of my time and/or money?

Do I ( readers of post ) have the resources and desire to implement a practice?

Of course, the matter is one can do whatever one wants with their boat and money.

As for my (the author of this entry) preference, I am not comfortable with thinking that elements of any kind are going to be sucked into the Yanmar on my boat. I decided to check engine and replace filters regularly.

Question ,why would you remove it?
It's not hard to inspect or clean.
