Which Yanmar is the better motor.
Plans for my build call for 5 to 10 hp -- 22' cutter, 5000# --- so either would work.

I'd go for a Yanmar 2YM15, Volvo D1-13, Beta 14 or 16, Westerbeke 12D2

why would you install an engine that's been out of production for 20 years. Or one at the end of it's lifespan. Especially one that's raw water cooled.

Availability, size, weight, price
And they've been around forever. I thought they were both pretty durable

This is a serious 2 thumbs up for the 1GM10. It is a simple reliable engine that has been in production for 20+ years. This means that there are many spares out there to be had. It is very simple to work on and diagnose. Being small, means that the spares are small and generally cheaper. This goes for the previously mentioned engines as well. They are light also. I removed mine dockside on a Flicka 20 and used the boom and a handy billy to haul it out of the boat. I then wheeled it up the dock in a dock cart and we lifted it into the trunk of our Corrola. I also fitted an 80A alternator that can be turned on/off as needed. When near full output, it does load the engine. This is good though as it needs to work and run hot to avoid carboning.
