Where can I get an anchor for free?

I've been shopping for anchors in various anchorages...what anchorages have the best anchors for a 50 ft boat?

I picked up two from the "discard pile" at my old winter hardstanding marina. One was a little bent, and the other requires re galvanising ... but you can't argue with the price.

You could also learn to weld and make one.

So, you are shopping for an anchor close to a harbor, right? One critical piece of information is lacking...............Where the heck are you????

It doesn't matter really...I'm on a boat and can sail anywhere with enough time.

I think I'll find the very best and newest models in the Med.

Okay then, If you are traveling in the Mid-Atlantic coast of the U.S. then Annapolis is a great choice because there are several chandlers that would either deliver one to you or pick you up, gratis. Most go out of their way to accommodate you, especially if you are spending $$$ on a new piece of bow candy.

"Bow Candy"...that's what I want. But I want it for free...like something someone has discarded overboard.

????

Does this mean you will only be in areas where you are likely to be diving? That eliminates Annapolis!

Re: Where can I get an anchor for free?

Is it really worth sailing half way round the world just to get a free anchor?

Edit: Oh, you are looking to dive for a lost one. I know roughly where you could find a good one off Cape Flattery on the Great Barrier Reef.

So, you are going on a treasure hunt then? Have fun!
There are many consignment shops around where you can buy a second hand anchor but it won't likely be free!

Re: Where can I get an anchor for free?

Free anchors for scuba divers? Here are two locations where you will find 45lb Harborfast Hi-Blade anchors still attached to a length of chain. I cut these away when they were hopelessly tangled in turbid water.

33*00.636'N/079*35.340'W This anchor is wrapped among construction cement and rebar dumped in Graham Creek.

32*29.562'N/080*36.050'W This anchor is caught in a snag of tree root debris.

Re: Where can I get an anchor for free?

The reefs off Miami and the Florida Keys are a good hunting ground. Back when I was an active diver, I didn't even bother to bring most of them up. How many anchors do you need? Oh no, that question may have been a mistake. It was rhetorical. I don't really care how many anchors you need!

Methinks Trim69/70 is feeling the need for a tongue-in-cheek smiley.
