Re: Where can I get an anchor for free?

A different take on treasure hunting...

A large CQR should be under some rocks at Playa Francesca off La Graciosa / Canary Islands.

The owner wasn't really unhappy to loose this thing though...

Re: Where can I get an anchor for free?

Methinks it doesn't take 2 accounts to ask where the free anchors are w/out being willing to share in what locations the owner of said accounts is And sailing all over the world for free "bow candy"?
Nope. Just nope

Re: Where can I get an anchor for free?

I like free stuff too but I would think that a guy with a 50 foot boat had better get used to 50 foot boat expenses.

Having said that, I know of a 45lb CQR and a 66lb claw anchor on the bottom in central Florida, with about 100ft of chain included. But I wouldn't consider either of them suitable for a 50ft boat....

I have a 45 lb CQR in my front yard. You can have it for the price of a tank refill and how much a boat would cost you to take it out in the bay and back.

Re: Where can I get an anchor for free?

I know where (lat/lon) of a 35lb Delta with a bent shank and no ballast in the Wrightsville Beach anchorage, only 6ft deep. I wouldn't use on a 50ft'er.

Near (59.950635, -149.241049)
I watched fella toss one over without having the rode attached.
He was just a passenger, and the captain was a little more than mad.
I honestly think he would have thrown the fella in after it if it had not been so deep and cold. And, perhaps, others had not been nearby to witness the murder.

Should be easy to find. By my reckoning, those co-ordinates are expressed down to about 1 cm (less than 1/2').

Which part of the anchor is at that location?

Maybe down to a 1/2", but I notice the hemisphere is still a guess!

Re: Where can I get an anchor for free?

For the nicest free anchor you look for the nicest boat anchored in the anchorage, dive on their anchor at 0300 hrs ... you can find it easily as there is a big long chain leading from it to the yacht ... undo the shackle, and take the anchor.

Probably best to leave the anchorage at that time ... quietly and quickly! and do this on a night without much wind!

;-)

Re: Where can I get an anchor for free?

I was fishing in me tinny the other month when a piece of new 1/4" silver line drifted up beside me boat. I thought it was attached to a crab pot, so started pulling. At the end of the about 20 metres of line was about a 3 metre length of brand new 5/16" stainless steel chain attached to a new 4 kg galvanised danforth anchor. No idea how the original owner managed to loose it, but I scored a great freebie!
