Performance Cat makers?

Please list any performance cat builders that you know of...

Seems like Gunboat and HH are two popular 'very high-end' builders.

I believe Catana and Outremer are in the next pricing tier.

I recently stumbled upon companies like SeaWind and Balance.

Others?

Hi Boatingnewbie,

Be sure to check out the ITA 14.99 if you are looking at performance cats. Website is: ITA CATAMARANS - SAIL INTO A DIFFERENT WIND and they are active on their FB page here: https://www.facebook.com/itacatamarans/?ref=br_rs

Hull No. 1 was recently launched and will be at the Canne show. I have been considering a purchase of the ITA for over a year now and I had the opportunity to visit the factory late last year while No. 1 was in construction. You can check out my video on my youtube channel "iliohale Productions".

I have looked at the Outremer, Seawind, and HH boats and in my opinion, the ITA is a great value and a fantastic design. The key guys at the ITA factory are outstanding and I believe their build execution is one of the best in this class of boats. My opinion.

Good luck

Gary

Hey Gary,

Wow, what a beautiful boat!

What's the price range on this boat?

Re: Performance Cat makers?

reality is that performance cats are coastal cruisers at best.

Overload it and I am going to be faster and will ruin your weekend.

So, if you buy one, do not do ocean passage

People are known to starve on such cats trying to cross oceans.

have nice day

Re: Performance Cat makers?

I believe the base boat is in the low 800K euro range but be sure to compare apples to apples when comparing price. I found out that many standard features on the ITA are options on other boats. Plus, you need to really consider details such as the use of epoxy resin and carbon reinforcing. I also found that overall the ITA components are higher quality for things like the windless, sails, rigging, pumps, fixtures, and so on.

Look, here is the bottom line when comparing, find your 2 or 3 top choices based on your requirements. Then push the manufactures to provide you with the detailed build specs and list of materials/components in the base boat price. Talk to current owners, Do a factory visit for your two top boats, meet the actual people responsible for building your boat. Then go with the manufacture and dealer that you have the most confidence in. No matter how good the boat looks or how good the specs are, if the build execution is poor then it will be a miserable experience and very costly to make corrections.

OK, there is some truth here and some BS. If you buy a performance cat, yes you want to be careful with how you load it down. Buy a Lagoon 50 or a Leopard 50 load them up with a bunch of weight and the performance will degrade less on a percentage basis then a similar sized performance cat. You really want to pay attention to the design polars for light and heavy ship. Talk with owners and see what they have experienced compared to the polars. Be realistic with how much weight you plan to bring on board. If you want to bring 5 tons of crap with you, then don't buy a performance cat. To me the advantages of performance sailing out weight the desire to bring a bunch of crap.

Got a chuckle out that one, Arsenelupiga, keep it up.

Our Chris White Voyager 48 loaded with cruising/liveaboard odds and ends including an extra sandwich hasn't had any problem staying ahead of Lagoons. Of course the Lagoons we've met haven't been sailed by you so that could change. Toss us some crackers as you go by

Cheers,

Funny ... spoken like someone who has never sailed (or tried to sail a lagoon) I sailed lagoons twice both times with a professional skipper on the boat. It motored faster in 25 kts of wind on the beam than it sailed ... I was amazed ...

Haha. Yeah... in looking to buy a catamaran I'm just not looking forward to cruising at 6-7 knots most of the time. "Time is money" as they say, and I'd much rather have a faster sailing boat.

Re: Performance Cat makers?

Stealth is another maker I considered when I was looking.

Very good price, very lightweight, very fast. On the scale of performance cruising boats they are closer to racing than cruising, but they are a cruising boat.

Depends how much performance your looking for.

I have to set the record straight. I can't speak for all Lagoons (or all skippers) but with 25 kts on the beam I sail my 440 (both sails single reefed) at double digits, which I could never do with the engines.
