Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

No worries! The slopes were steep.

Some sailor here is sure to fit the bill. Faint heart never won a fair lady? Brave on the waves of romance? It isn't all sunsets guys but somebody must have the anty.

As to family you can choose them, demote the ones who don't measure up to relatives so you save on the holidays!

Being pagan lets me be very open minded about the fine print everywhere. Definitions by nature tend to be limiting.

Cheers

as far as i know taylors only make parafin pressurised heaters, good quality but the fuel needs pumping and a bit of a PITA to keep filling the tank from jerry cans.

mine i can just buy 60/40 red diesel in bulk if i'm running it over the winter and pump up from the main tank, uses about 120 L a month if running 24/7
Good info ,,,,, seems you got a winner with both the heater and the wifey !!

yup! red diesel fuel was 37p/L 10 years ago, about 90p/L now for heating fuel.

shore power is much cheaper we pay 9.5p per unit or about £30-40 a month heating the boat , running a fridge and battery charging.

but it does widen the possibilities of wintering afloat in cold climats

i guess +/- 1 £ per day to heat and charge is not too bad,

This is really amazing Atoll! There's a lot I can learn here reading through this! The engine room components seem pretty complex.

thanks for the compliment, though apart from the external drive, the engine room is pretty standard for a small marine application.

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

here are a few photos taken over the last few weeks.

the new bow roller to extend off the cross beam to accommodate the anchor so it does not come in contact with the gelcoat when it is stored on deck in the roller.

fiberglass moldings for the cockpit cover.
the finished cover will be about 9ft by 6ft,supported on alloy uprights.

i had hoped to do it in one piece to keep it light, but as i couldn't find a free heated space undercover that was big enough,i ended up making it in 3 sections that bolt together which make it slightly heavier, but a lot stronger due to the ribs where it joins acting as cross beams.

this will have sunbrella front, back and side covers with vinyl windows to create a fully enclosed cockpit, but be able to be partially or fully rolled up when sailing.

there are also provisions for catching rainwater, and having about 500w of solar either side of the boom.

i have included a photo of the honeycomb i used for the cover and the fuel tank i built previously,as requested! here is a link to the material as well which CFS resins cornwall carry stock of.

PP honeycomb lightweight structural core, Nidaplast sandwich panels for the yachting sector

Ah so you're going for a hard top? Curious how that will looks on a Prout with it's curves.

Also curious to see how you deal with the main sheet track and genoa sheets. Those are the two main things stopping my fabric cover from completely sealing up my cockpit. As it is I still get plenty of water in during rain or rouge waves.

me too!
the design i augmented from a few different elite dodger designs as i wanted a full hardtop rather than the standard 3/4 one with the windscreen.

i also didn't want the fixed, heavy windscreen molding that would block the breeze in hot weather.

i will also run a trim alongside the genoa tracks and on the cabin top to attach the cover to and prevent water trickle into the cockpit.

as for the lines i will follow the slope on the cabin top front to back, and have an 8 degree camber side to side with a raised trim on the edges so any rainwater collected flows into a skin fitting at each corner at the front.

i'm looking at fitting 2 ,36v 18 amp solar panels that are 1.8mx0.8m either side with mppt controllers giving about 500w at 12v,which should work well as the 3 sections are flat, but sloped off at 8 degrees either side.

here is a video of another elite with full cover,a bit bigger than what mine will be but basically the same idea see video at 5:04

Re: Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

popular on cruising boats, you can always have both dodger and bimini
the dodger being independent of the bimini can simply collapse on folding

This Snowgoose looks reasonably tidy.

But the reason I'm posting it, is that there are a fair few images there showing the cockpit tent, that might be of use.
