How does one hire a captain to sail a newly purchased boat home?

This may belong in another thread but we are looking at a multihull in LA and would need it brought to Mobile Alabama at least. Where do you look for a qualified captain and get a quote for something like that?

Your insurance company will have the most say in who you can and cannot use. Your broker should have some he can suggest, then make sure your insurance company is cool with it. I would start with the broker.

I recently had a 40 cat brought from FL to the Northeast by a captain located in Naples, FL. He does this type of delivery all the time. My insurance required copy of captain's license. He made very good time - I was pleased with the delivery.

Well let's assume that your starting point is Louisiana and not LA as in Los Angeles.

If it is LA it will be long, will take some significant prep and be very expensive. If it really is LA then you need to hire the right guy, someone you can trust with your boat off in the wilds, with the right crew (presuming you won't be one of them) and he must be committed for the whole 30-60 day trip. I suspect that trip will cost more than $20,000.

So back to a two day delivery from New Orleans or similar. How competent are you? Do you just need some crew? If so post on this forum what you need and where. It seems that most such postings get filled quickly and you usually don't have to pay any more than travel and boat expenses.

But if you want an experienced captain and some some crew to go along with him, then post on this forum. I'll bet you get several responses. And yes, ask your broker for advice.

That kind of delivery goes for about $500/day including crew.

We had a fantastic captain bring our boat from Ft. Lauderdale to NY. He actually is paid by other future captains to go with him to earn their hours for their licenses so the cost is greatly reduced. We had to pay for him and all food, along with fuel. The rest of the crew paid their own way (I believe there were 4 others). PM me if you want his name. If you're talking California's LA, that might be tougher but I'm sure he could do Louisiana to Alabama.

If it's coming from California, you realistically need to look at having it brought by either truck or ship to the gulf coast. This can add substantially to the cost of the boat, and often makes buying one already on this side of the continent cheaper. If it's in Louisiana, it's a pretty easy ride to Mobile. Take a long weekend, a few buddies, maybe a local sailing bum and make a party of it.

The boat is in Southern California so we're talking a transit through the canal. The boat is 26' wide trimaran so it can't be shipped by truck, but shipping by boat my be an option. Who can ship a 50'X26' trimaran?
