Ex Cali, Why do gaffs require 2 people? Keep it coming. BOB
First I am no gaff rig expert and those more experienced can chime in. My brothers boat is gaff rigged 50 footer. There is a halyard for main luff and gaff so two lines to pull. The gaff needs to stay fairly level when hoisting to avoid binding. The gaff and sail is heavy. One can alternate pulling the luff then gaff (single person mode) or one person does luff and one does gaff.

On brothers boat windlass is positioned to accept main halyard but still must be tailed and gaff raised evenly.

I suspect of the 6 power winches on subject boat at least 2 are dedicated to the sail raising duties.

My brothers boat can be single handed but dont expect any two minute sail changes. Even with two of us it takes 4-5 minutes to hoist and set the main. I would guess a similar amount of time to take a reef if doing solo or maybe 3 minutes or so with two working it.

Two masts and two gaffs as on subject boat is too much sail work for a lazy butt like me...

Re: Comments on gaff rigged schooner cat

We saw the boat two year ago in Key West. She was absolutely stunning. I would bet at 60' long she would probably have a pretty smooth motion compared to a 40' cat.

Re: Comments on gaff rigged schooner cat

Oh boy, "just a plywood catamran". I remember when this boat was announced. I wondered why Nigel Arens would do a Wharram knockoff. The specifications are first rate. Why is it for sale now? The price is up there, but it is a first class boat. It would be good for day charter or a dive charter. I was looking at the marble countertops, I have to redo mine.

I think you are missing some of the benefits. Once the sails are down you have a volleyball court, or a dance floor and take her to the high latitudes and you have your very own skating rink!

Re: Comments on gaff rigged schooner cat

Not to mention some other specs

14 kt under power (explains the (2) 100 hp turbo-diesels)
150 gal/hr water maker, that is a lot
25 lbs/day ice maker, that helps explain its mission
no SSB

So in conclusion, me thinks 'ol Bob "sandcrab", is a party animal.

Re: Comments on gaff rigged schooner cat

I sail a 44' Wharram and like the expanse of deck space. It sails level and when others are complainin' about the sea state, we're just gettin' started. Mine's rigged with 2:1 mainsail and it's not as easy raising the main as it was on my 34' sloop. I've heard some of the gaff sailors complaining about how much line has to be hauled just to get the gaff up. It would be great to have the resort version of catamaran with electric winches. They sail great.

Hey, ol party Bob can invite you, me and 30 or so of his closest CF buddies. I'll bring the ice. Oh, wait it makes its own!

Party on Wayne...

Re: Comments on gaff rigged schooner cat

The more I look over the specs, the more intrigued I am. That little hot rod you see me sitting in on my avatar weighs all of 1790 lbs, and could be plopped down on the deck. That way all my forum friends from the world wide hot rod community could cruise with me on their roadways. Just a thought.

Re: Comments on gaff rigged schooner cat

The half moon is at the spreader
It's nice to sail at night
It's cold, it's the weather
A cup of rum tastes so hot
Get the anchor come up to wind
Drop the hook, now we're in
All the houses at the shore
Are celebrating that's for sure
We're alone on the hook
Celebrating with a book
It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got

Sometimes there is a single halyard rigged to a bridle instead, but this is often not possible on larger rigs. When the rig has two halyards on a gaffer, the usual arrangement, they are called the peak halyard and the throat halyard. Traditionally, anyway. I agree that some of those electric winches are almost certainly dedicated to sail hoisting duties, those would be pretty big gaffs to hoist, even if they are carbon or something, which seems unlikely.

traditionally the gaff rig can be "scandalised",A to reduce sail fast and B so you only haul on one halyard at a time
