Thought it might be interesting to compare engine power on cats. Several around UK have the 9.9 yam outboard, but I reckon its far to low on power if you want to go to windward in bad weather.

I have a 27 hp diesel outboard. I like being able to pull the props out of the water, and hydraulic tilt makes this easy. The skegs on the motor are the deepest part of the boat and with wings, I have no problems with cavitation.

I have achieved 2 knots to windward against 40 kts of wind

What is the displacement of your cat? I am still weighing options on powering my trimaran.

She weighs 4 tons, but a catalac has a lot of windage and very little in the water so needs a lot of ommph to go against the wind.

My Prout 38' Manta weighs in at about 15,00 obs (7.5 tons) and has two Vovlo Penta 28 hp diesels with sail drives. She consumes about 1.5 gph cruising at 6-6.5 knots at about 2200 to 2300 rpm. Of course current can slow me down,

We have a 24 HP Yanmar and a Sonic drive leg on our 37 ft Prout Snowgoose Elite.

We have twin Yanmar 3ym30's About 30 hp each. Our boat is 37, weight is about 8 tons. We can do about 8 knots on engines alone. At cruise we get about 1.2 gallons per hour, we do about 6.5 knots at cruise.

Actually, only because I don't want any gasoline on board and that was the smallest diesel outboard I could find.

I have twin 30hp Glacier Bay electric motors for the big boat.

What kind of dinghy have you, that can take a 207 Lb. (dry) diesel outboard?

I ran a 13' Boston Whaler, which had a 40 HP Johnson (gas) outboard, which only weighed about 180 Lbs.

the yanmar outboard was originally designed for use on ribs and as a workboat engine. But I would have thought it a tad noisy - mine is buried under 3/4 ply to minimise the sounds in the cockpit.

I have two Yamaha 9.9 s on my PDQ 32 - it seems to be all the power I need - the boat will move at 8 knots with both engines running and does 6 comfortably with one.

I have seen the 9.9s on other boats, and they do a great job in light winds, but seem to have almost zero capability as soon as you want to go to windward.

The 9.9s we had on our PDQ36 did not do the job in heavy winds. We are much happier with the performance of our twin 30hp Volvo Pentas for our Manta 42.

Our Prout 37 has a Yanmar 38hp. It moves about 5-5.5 knots at 2200 rpm and will add a about a knot to that when running at 2800 rpm.

Where it does well is motoring into a chop. It has lots of torque and will keep the boat moving even when pounding into the wind.
