What a shame. It appears from the article that the owners were ashore when high wind and waves caused the cat to drag her anchor and be hurled onto the rocks.

Thanks for the translation Astrid. Judging from the photo, nothing short of steel construction could have saved any yacht in those circumstances.

Maybe a lot more chain would've saved her from dragging? We put out 10-1 in the Bahamas, because those pesky squalls come through whenn you're not on the boat.......i2f

I2f, my point was in reference to the title of the thread 'Cat breaks up' and the fact that it was placed in the multihull, rather than general sailing or destinations section - ie, the same would have happened to any boat, not just a cat, that did not have a steel hull: once she was on the rocks in pounding waves, she was going to break up. As to avoiding the situation in the first place, you are no doubt correct.

The picture is tough to look at. I feel terrible for the guy with his hands on his head in disbelief.

That was the same day that 11 boats in Kings Cup regatta washed up onto the beach just north of there. Unseasonal westerly (onshore) winds and swells that were forecast some days before. Local scuttlebutt has it that this boat was left on someone else's mooring and also did not have insurance.........

I cat that dragged anchor here in Port Hadlock Washington (taking a couple of boats with it) ended up against a cement seawall....it is trashed.

That's very bad to look at but at least no one seems to have been onboard unlike the refuee boat that was smashed up on Christmas island yesterday.
