Re: Are Cats Made from Duflex Panel Kits Strong ?

Very nice! So we bond to a film which is in turn well bonded to the core. If punctured, water ingress is limited by the core's structure ...

Looks like a good potential. Promises better shear strength of the resultant sandwich than with a foam core.

Not sure how you reach that conclusion. According to their own table, Nidacore has the WORST sheer strength.

+ after the Rocna case, I will never ever look with anything less than sound criticism at comparisons made by someone who makes the thing being compared ...

Now that I look at that first image (powercat), I believe it may be a Tenannt design rather than Schionning one ??
The first image was "self designed" though it does appear to have heavy leanings towards Tennant.
But thats not the one I speak of, there was a definite schionning (unless it is a copy ) in the harbour that used polyprop honeycomb.
I went down and checked it out and there were areas, in the right light , with a morning dew and a very keen eye, where you could make out a honeycomb pattern .

Re: Are Cats Made from Duflex Panel Kits Strong ?

Could there be a problem with condensation forming in a honeycomb core? If there was condensation in the core and the boat was in below freezing weather there would be a good chance of delamination.

I was initially the same
The first breed that was around several years back had quite a furry (read thirsty) scrim on it plus the scrim to me seemed able to be peeled away easier (pre resin) than I would have liked.
Samples I have seen since seem to be considerably better and if I was needing more sheet material, I would be looking seriously at it for my own use on any flat panel area.

This website reference has them building in Duflex? And there is no specific designer designated.

Brian is getting confused

In my post I said I have seen a schionning (or a very convincing copy) built from polyprop honeycomb. (that is vessel one, totally separate from the vessels pictured)

I also said there are two other vessels, (pictures provided) also built from polyprop honeycomb

While the Powerplay certainly looks like a Schionning and I daresay it started out as one, it would seem they are now calling it their own design for whatever reason.

Polycore PowerPlay

I agree, I am somewhat confused....

....maybe because of an association of these two webpages:
http://www.polycore.com.au/News--and--Events.php
http://www.powerplaycatamarans.com.a...RPLAY_1480.pdf

That first site displays a photo of the very powercat that was posted here on the forum. It is signed by Bruce Hodgens. When I google his name I get that second website reference that ties him to PowerPlay cats??

Anyway I'm trying now to sort out if PowerPlay Cats are built of Polycore product or not, and if they had a previous history of Duflex??

Bruce did some reviews, wrote some articles for magazines and did a "how to" guide . more here
Bruce Hodgens - Google Search
Powerplays are not built from polycore unless something has changed recently, they have always been built from duflex planks as far as I know

Don't know but wonder if they are using a mold now they are in China.

Since they moved to China only seem the 3D drawings on website. Have they built a vessel there yet?

I have a gentleman who has expressed the desire to possible utilize NidaCore in the place of Duflex for a Schionning's design. But the response from Schionning would seem as to not recognize this material as a viable substitute to be used for his designs??

The second vessel you posted there became known to me only recently when a gentleman asked on one of the forums if I was aware of this aft-masted vessel. I said no and posted it in my discussions of same.
Lyra's Rig

From the article: "The contention that the rig won't go to windward is codswallop. We travel at a hull speed equal to the true wind speed at 30 degrees apparent under auto pilot and down to 28 degrees hand steering, and the rig still pulls well down to 23 degrees when motor sailing."

Sailing at true windspeed at 28/30 degrees apparent? Sounds good.
