Anchor Question (sorry)

OK. Anchor question. Not looking for a debate.

Looking for input on what anchors people have & successfully use on CATS in the 40-50 foot range.

Looking specifically for type & WEIGHT. I'm getting lots of "expert opinions" as I consider options for my new Hélia 44, and I guess I'm soliciting a few more...

Been cruising on 34 ft cat now for 15 months and have not dragged once. Would not look at anything else but a new gen anchor. Rocna or Sarca. We have a Rocna 15 kg. website will advise on size. With 34 m 8 mm chain and 60 m rope rode.
Plough anchors are history.

I would be looking at a new gen anchor of 26kg to 45kg. I prefer heavier

Manson, SARCA, Rocna, Mantus, SPADE. Need to check what will fit your vessel.

We have a 44' cat but considerably lighter than yours. We use a 20kg Bruce anchor. A genuine Bruce - the copies are far inferior. Very happy with it.

I'd suggest you'd be looking at a 25-30kg anchor, whatever type you get.

We are on a 40´ six tonne cat. The Manson Supreme (20 kg) has dragged twice - only in rivers with soft soupy mud. Will probably swap it for one size up someday soon.

We also use a Fortress FX-37 which has never dragged.

47 ft 8 tonne cat - have a Rocna 25 kgs though bought it before all the drama re the chinese made Rocnas. We have 100 metres of 10 mm chain. All chain rode is what you need for the Kimberleys and Indonesia. I probably would buy a Manson Supreme. Had a delta on a 33 ft cat occasionally dragged in soft mud but usually held if you let the anchor settle in before reversing. The Rocna has NEVER dragged (fingers crossed)

We have a 16kg Kobra 2 on our 38 ft FP Athena. It works reliably in the Adriatic and deals well with grass. The standard FOB/Brittany thing that FP supplied then was very unreliable.

The Lagoon 450 is about 17t and nearly 46ft/14m. I think we have a 'Sea Blade' was supposed to be a Spade but looks more like part way between the Spade and Rocna. 80m of 12mm chain. So far no dragging but not really challenged in a real blow.

We have a 60 lbs Manson supreme on a 44', 9T catamaran. It dragged several times in mud. I would buy a different one the next time. I was very impressed with the 8kg Spade I had on my 9T monohull.

For a 10.8 Ton Helia 44, I think your on the right track with a Rocna, Manson Supreme or Mantus in the 60 to 80 lbs range as the primary anchor.

May want to consider a Mantus as a secondary anchor as they can be unbolted and stowed flat in a canvas bag.

We have a Rocna 33 with 100 meters of 10mm chain on our 46', 9 ton cat. I've never had an anchor that set so fast and held so well. If I were to do it over again I would get the slightly larger, less expensive Manson Supreme 80lb. We have a Fortress 37 as a second anchor. When we get back to the States I will probably get the Manson and use the Rocna as a third anchor, throwing away the CQR that came with the boat.

You really can't go wrong with any of the new generation anchors sized appropriately for your boat. It seems that most manufacturers are using 60 knots as a guideline nowadays, as opposed to 30 knots that you used to see in the past.

20kg spade with 60m 8mm chain on a 9tonne (when fully loaded) 42 foot cat. Hasnt been tested over 40knots yet but has held very well in all bottoms seen so far including the testing seagrass beds in up to 30knots. Have dived on it to find only the very tip of the shaft visible in sand while a cqr that had been there for longer was just sitting on its side maybe 20% buried... would never go back to one of the old gen anchors now.

for your bigger boat in a spade i would go the 25kg or even 30 if world cruising

probably only downside i have to the expensive newer anchors is when dropping into rocky areas and deep water - you do wonder if you will get it back. Will proabably add a fishermans for such times at some point.

Sorry I forgot to mention above that our anchor is 25kg. One issue worth considering about size is the strength of the windlass (our one is 1600W). At times it really strains pulling our 25kg anchor out from buried in thick mud and lifting kgs of mud. Also I wonder what is a maximum depth we could anchor in? I wouldn't anchor in more than 30-40m depth (say for a day fishing) as I expect that the windlass would not lift all the weight.

We also fitted Anchor Rescue - Home . Maybe over-the-top but tend to forget it is there after fitted but always an option to save a stuck anchor.
