Jim, I am not in any way comparing the OP with the Hiscocks. I was more or less trying to show how asinine it is to say that anything under some made up size limit is unsafe. The OP is at the dreamer stage. I was once at that stage, and read everything that I could. I bought a 17 foot keel boat and learned a little about sailing. Gave that boat away and bought a 26 foot boat that I knew nothing about, other than it had all of the equipment that the Hiscocks and Roth recommended. It turned out to be a Contessa 26 which is a magnificent sailing boat. Small, and sometimes uncomfortable, but a great boat. The only recommendation I gave the OP was to get as much coastal cruising as possible, before leaving on a long passage. I had almost 2000 miles of coastal cruising before I lifted the hook for the Marquesas. If I had done all of the reading, but not the coastal cruising, I dont know if the trip would have been a success. I moved up to a 37 foot boat, and then a 44 footer, but many of my fondest memories are from the 26 footer in the tropics. Life was good. ______Grant.

IMHO it is as OP stated. All sorts of boats have already done this. With both excellent drivers and with ignorant skippers too.

I would pick up the strongest of the boats with the highest chance of coming back from a bad capsize.

I would do so because under certain size a boat has relatively high chance of ending up on her side, or upside down. When this happens a weak structure or one that has too much reverse stability becomes a liability.

Rigging, scantlings, scupper size, keel type, capsize ratio etc. etc. Flicka was purpose bluewater designed and is widely recognized as such. C&C 27 is a great coastal cruiser, but not in the same class.

the only thing that makes a boat safely make passages is the loose nut behind the wheel/tiller.

learn to sail and practice, then go out in whatever you feel safest sailing.
sail everything.

Mini Transats? Plus they are a darn sight quicker than most sub 40' cruising boats.

I don't think the question asked a few pages back has been answered. Has anyone- themselves- crossed the Atlantic ocean in a production under thirty foot boat. Jordan may have done the Pacific milk run.(I am trying to read between the lines here) And how was it?
BTW- there is a big difference between Webb and this man, who has never really ocean sailed before.
Me? I will cross the Atlantic when I am good and ready with a forty foot Valiant. Call me chicken- but I need enough space when I get over to Europe that my wife, and probably two grown kids can live comfortably.
