Why do monohulls have sails?

Exactly. It's a nice ride coming back though. Last trip (2014) trying to make George Town, we made good 5 nm in about 2 hours. We blew it off and went back in at Galliot Cut (Blackpoint), went to Warderick Wells (Emerald Rock), and had a great sail to Eleuthera the next day. It was a nice beam reach, and made great time. Same with sailing from there to Abaco.

We're back in Texas, but heading to the Bahamas again in October. I hope this little Yanmar has another trip left in it.

why dont they genetically engineer a banana that grows with the bend already in it? Save a lot of really boring work for the banana benders - but then, what else would they do? (they might all decide to go sailing, that'd be a bastard...)

Since monohulls only have ONE engine - you would think they would be trying to save it. But I too notice here in the Southern Caribbean, monohulls appear to favor motoring over sailing.

Evidently, a “Banana Bender” is a resident of Queensland, Australia, where bananas grow, and people with nothing better to do put a bend in them.

According to the Australian Banana Growers Council:

Come to think of it, the only Oysters I saw during the course of my cruise last summer, were docked or moored in Newport over the Boat Show weekend, one of my final stops before my return home...

2014 must have been an off-year for the Oyster Rally to Labrador, I guess...

Bloody expensive white cloth things, that will stretch within in the first hour of use, are easily dissolved by sunlight, rot in damp conditions and finally turn a dirty off white colour within the first season requiring immediate replacement which will cost about the same as a new diesel engine.

They are used on special days when the wind in just in the right direction and its cloudy with gentle winds or you might be recognised by friends and other members of the yacht club.

Now, there is a sort of virtue in propping up said yacht club bar explaining how you continue to keep your 30 yr old volvo running with just duct tape and a clothes peg on the throttle.

monos have sails for same reason muiltis have sails--so they stay fresh and crisp under covers -- they too spensive to ever USE, for gods's sakes!!!

I was aboard an Island Packet 38 last winter in the Bahamas. The guy had cruised it several times between New England and Georgetown. He was asking me how to set up his reef line.

I wasn't quite sure what he meant until he pulled the sailcover and showed me that the lines were tightly wrapped around the boom on both ends! He had owned the boat perhaps 10 years and never reefed! Certainly you can't real consider yourself to be a sailboat if you're not at least perpared to sail?!?!
