Hi everybody, found this boat in my vicinity and wonder a) what type it is b) if a twin keel boat like it is suitable for blue water cruising. how is the capsize behavior of twin keels compared to classical keel boats? the boat looks neglected but seems to be quite new, the zinc anodes are like new, rudder bearings ok, everything looks dirty but unused. comments are welcome, i would also like to get to know appr price that one could pay for a renovation project like that in euros. greetings kuenze

Parts made of synthetic materials may suffer from quite some aging, so not reliable anymore. But all the metal parts are may be ok.
I am not an expert but for a renovation project I would assume you need to invest in sails (may be 3000 USD?), you need to replace the running rigging and some blocks (2000 USD) and the engines needs to be overhauled (1000 USD). Next topic would be the electronics on board. Depending of the personal preferences you would spend 500-2000 USD (+radar?) and a wind pilot (second hand?)
In addition solar and wind power, 1000-3000 USD and new batteries (800 USD)
The bottom paint is may be 1000 USD plus boat yard fees.
And you need to look at the safety equipment, especially you will probably need a new life raft (600-800 USD).
Thats what just came up to my mind. Where are you located?

Sure twin keels are good for cruising. Shallow draft allows you to enter bays which are not accessible to many other boats and the boat can stand on them. RM Yachts is offering this keel option since long time even for blue water cruising.

Twin keel boats are often not as stable as their deep-keel counterparts simply because their ballast can’t be as low down. Additional ballast is often used to increase stability. This, along with the large wetted surface of the twin keels, tend to hamper the performance of twin-keel boats. People who want to explore shallower areas, or who need their boat to ground out at low tide, accept this compromise.

I would agree with psk 125. As far as tenderness, look at what happens to the CG when the weather keel rises. I don't see a negative since the architect probably knew is business.

Twin keels are excellent and have many advantages as well as one disadvantage. They go better down wind, do not roll as much at anchor or when wing-on-wing, usually have slightly shallower draft, and can be beached for a quick clean or quiet night ashore in some remote place, and can be transported on any low-loader instead of a specialist boat trailer, do not require anything special to hold it up when ashore for repairs, and they sell quickly in areas where they are appreciated such as in coral reef country. They sometimes need a little extra ballast to be self-righting, such as steel beaching shoes, since the draft is less.

Disadvantage is they do not point quite so well as a single fin keel and require a little extra paint and antifouling. They have a similar performance to a long keel but better helm response in a turn.

Sorry for the delay on the first question, is this a van de Stadt? I contacted a friend who has a 34' steel van de Stadt and he knows of others. His opinion from the photo is that it is not a van de Stadt because it looks "too boxy". The VDS boats around here are single keel.

If VDS didn't design a bilge keeler then the builder may not have had the marine architectural knowledge to do the design properly.
