Thoughts on the Island Packet 29?

I currently sail an Island Packet 350, and have chartered the IP 29.
It is on the small side for long cruises, but would make a good weekender.
IP's are great boats, but remember that pre 1997 boats in particular are prone to need expensive chainplate replacement ... budget about 10k for that.

To be honest for that budget I think I’d be looking at mid 30’s boats, IP’s included.
A 29 will be small and just due to its size, slow. If you know that going in and are fine with that then it’s a fine choice, but I’m partial to IP’s.
They seem to particularly shine in shallow draft, tropical areas.

We bought our old IP as a starter boat, but then decided that there was nothing wrong with it. I had intended to go newer and larger, but did not look forward to all the pain of searching for another boat/
So I’d say maybe look a little larger, cause it may be all you decide you need or want.

If you want to stay with plastic, look for an old- late 60’s to early 70’s Columbia 29 mark 2 to 32’ range. Full keel, heavyish built and good motion comfort.
