Re: Star Link in the Bahamas

The 'in motion' hardware uses nearly double the power of the 'standard' hardware. We have the 'standard' hardware and it works fine up to 8 knts. Don't know about higher because we can't go faster.

In the Bahamas the unlimited ALIV mobile data plan is $140/mo. Most people here have been paying $135 a month for Starlink. Though as you mention that's going to be changing.

Re: Star Link in the Bahamas

Last time I was in Bahamas I was paying $90/mo for my US cell plan plus $90/mo for a Aliv plan here. Now I am paying $150/mo for Star Link and $10/mo for a prepaid US cell plan and getting much faster internet with much better coverage and it costs a little less.

Re: Star Link in the Bahamas, recent good experience

We installed Starlink InMotion in January and went six weeks in the Bahamas (West End to the southern extremes) with few interruptions. The service was excellent.

Yep, same here. We are in the Exumas and with rare exception we’ve had service everywhere. Is it a bit slow on occasion? Sure, but VERY infrequently. Is it worth $150/month to me plus equipment, with no guarantee it will work next month? Heck no. If my internet doesn’t work, I’ll just read a book. YMMV.

When your Aliv is slow or doesn't work do you get a discount? Seems you know it will only work or kind of work sometimes and are paying with no guarantee.

Meanwhile my Star Link has worked everywhere all the time in the Bahamas.

Re: Star Link in the Bahamas

The only place my Starlink hasn't worked was crossing the Great Bahama Bank at the half way point for about 30 minutes or so.

About 10 days ago. We were sailing at about 7 knots. My buddy boat has Starlink and had the same thing happen. We had been chatting with WhatsApp voice and it dropped out.

Re: Star Link in the Bahamas

Was in the Virgin Islands/PR and DR heading back to Florida and everything was great with Starlink Roam. Unlimited internet for $135/mo. Speeds plenty fast. Then I got an email saying “you are on a boat and we are shutting off your RV/roam plan.” Switched to Starlink Mobility and paid $150/mo for 50G/mo. We use more with guests on board - buy another 50G for $100. Same hardware but data limits were a pain. Speeds good.

Turned off SL for this hurricane season but heading back to the Bahamas this winter and will try RV again (maybe i will not trigger an email there versus lower Caribbean?). Not sure how all this works but my experience….
