South Florida Surveyor Recommendations

I am looking for an exceptional surveyor in the Ft. Lauderdale area that specializes in sailboats. Please chime in with your favorites. I want someone that can do a complete pre-purchase survey of the hull, systems, and rig. Must be SAMS or NAMS certified to satisfy insurance company.

Call Marc Slakoff in FLL. If he cannot schedule it he can recommend a someone. I have used Slakoff & Assoc for 20 years. Very satisfied and you get the findings quick, full report in 3 days

Thanks. I called and was referred to someone else. Apparently he does not do sailboats any longer.

Anyone else know a good one?

The best resource for surveyors is a website called captain rated (CaptainRated*). Go to services, then surveyors. It is broken down by state, but you will see certain surveyors who have been very highly rated. You will also see feedback from sailors, power boaters, etc - it can make a big diff as there are many surveyors who aren't as familiar with some pitfalls of sailboats but will take your $$$ anyway (if you see that they got a high rating from a sea ray owner, its just not the same as someone who had a good experiene having a Pacific Seacraft surveyed). Obviously, don't ever take a referral from the sellers broker. It is a small world and, unfortunately, more often than not, they ARE in collusion w one another. This can't be stressed enough - I have never heard of this type of situation turning out well. I've used this site 2x ( I live in CT, with good results both times). It has both emails and Phone #'s so that you can cast a wide net if you are on some type of time schedule.

Best surveyor I've ever dealt with Ed Rowe and he will do sailboats.

I've know Butch Pliske from the early seventies when he was racing sailboats. He has done all of my surveys.

If you use him, tell him he owes me referal fee.

Darn. If I had known I could get a referral fee I would have been hitting up Ed Rowe. Figure he owes me at least enough to buy a a small cup of coffee at Starbucks.

I have used and worked with one of the best marine surveyors ever, Dick Learned, in Stuart, FL. I have known him for over 30 years.

Re: South florida surveyor recommendations

Not too sure if this is too late or not, but i just had a survey done by Dylan Bailey.
Was VERY impressed with the thoroughness of the survey and what he covered.
I got sample survey reports from several surveyors and his was the best and most comprehensive.
would highly recommend him

Re: South florida surveyor recommendations

Paul Anstey is a great surveyor. I had a selling broker tell me she would never use him again because he breaks deals. But that's because he gets it right and works for the buyer. If you ask me, that's the kind of surveyor you want, right?

Good point. A negative review from a broker is a positive for a buyer, as far as I'm concerned. I have never personally used Paul Anstey, but have seen multiple recommendations for him. Here is his website:

Butch just quoted me $1,700 an hour! for a survey of a 40' cat. I know you get what you pay for, but that seems like an insane price. I know McKinsey doesn't charge that much for their best consultants and I don't even think brain surgeons charge that much when they're cutting open and inspecting your head. Did he raise his prices dramatically, or what did he do for you to make it worth that price?

Seems a bit pricey to me too. You sure that wasn't for the whole job? It's been a long time since I needed a survey so I'm out of touch on the pricing.

Of course a cat survey should cost twice as much as a mono survey. ;-)

Email was very specific that "we charge $1,700 per hour" and "a full survey with sea trial and bottom inspection would be at least 6 hours". With you on the double cost though, I do want them to inspect both sides!
