Pros and Cons On Pilothouse Yachts

I keep looking at this Adams Yacht here in Brisbane and keep thinking about our next boat.
This one keeps popping up australiawide : boats for sale in Australia
We are not very experienced and would love to hear the pros and cons on a boat like the Adams.

Why not go and have a look. See if you can get a trial drive. Give the broker a call to arrange a time first.

Price may be negotiable, pilothouse could be functional, lots of fuel...

Engine a touch small and could be old. May need to factor replacement into the equation.

The boat could be good enough to start asking (not from brokers or marinas) round for a surveyor and a mechanic.

Do take lots of photos and think very carefully before making any commitment.

Looks tidy Reiner after looking at lots of crap in Australia and some good options but too much money we purchased in Thailand instead. Pilot houses are comfortable for they give good room for there size but I cannot see a helm outside (forgive me if I missed it just had a quick scan of the ad) Friends have a RobertsPH with no outside helm and it can be hot over the summer but with a good autopilot you can still be in the shade up on deck.

Inside helm great for when the weather is crap. Get onto the boat see if you like the layout its a start! Have a look to see if there are any good South Coast 36's for sail at the moment looked at a beautiful one with Broker at Mooloolabah couple of years ago was very impressed with the boat for 36ft excellent layout, gret aliveaboard ..it was too much money at the time for us A$126k

Its probably sold by now. That has happened to people who post a link to a boat they are looking at, suddenly it becomes very attractive and offers start rolling in on it. Good luck.

Same thoughts as James above

Nice looking boat, can't see why the engine is considered small, 4.4 HP per ton of boat isn't small.

Previous boat was a PH, always loved sitting at the helm during rain storms passing other boats watching them all bundled up in the rain.

Had good ventilation as the PH windows give a good vacuum effect to draw air through the boat..

This looks like a well appointed example of an Adams 35, and it may fit your plans...

A good friend of ours had one a few years ago, and he was so disappointed in its sailing performance that he sold it on pretty quickly. Unusual for an Adams design!

Also, getting parts for Lister engines has become VERY difficult according to other friends who finally re-powered their Golden Hind with a Yannie to escape that situation. But, this anecdote doesn't answer your query about pilothouse designs, does it! I guess that what I wanted to say is that not all pilot house yachts are motorsailors, and some sail nearly as well as their conventional sisters.

Nice looking boat. Everything is a compromise, but other than sleeping and cooking, you spend a lot of time above on a boat. That kind of boat can make a night passage a pleasure, or a passage in nasty weather comfortable, or a cup of coffee on a foggy morning nice. If you are avid sailor that likes the wind in your face etc, then the pilot may not be for you, but if the boat is a tool to take you from point A to point b...then it would be great I think.

Having fairly recently made the switch from a more traditional cutter to a pilothouse ketch, I can tell you I love it.
x2 on the outside steering, I can't imagine parking my boat with only inside steering. That would not be fun.

That's what worries me about our next boat, the way it sails. We love ours but would like some more space and be able to take friends along.
I am not to worried about the motor, a good friend of mine is a diesel mechanic .
I just said to Sam we need to start playing Gold Lotto so when we win we can make an offer on something like yours :-)
